Oh No The Mayor of Minneapolis Declares That His City "Ain't Mary Tyler Moore-ville Anymore

Nice way to diss the show that put this city on the map!

Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak welcomed guests to Netrooots Nation 2011 last night. In his speech to Netroots guests, Rybak noted that Minneapolis “ain’t Mary Tyler Moore-ville any more” in a reference to the 1970s sitcom set in Minneapolis. Specifically, he noted Minneapolis’ large and expanding immigrant populations and the city’s friendliness to biking, hotel accommodations, and the GLBT population. He ended his speech with a rousing compliment towards Minneapolis’ export industry,” saying, “We take all the crazy politicians we have and we send them to the rest of the country. Welcome Michelle Bachman, welcome Tim Pawlenty. We keep the good ones here and home.”

That's a lie! I could be going to school in Minneapolis, and if and when I get there, he had better apologize.

I *think* this mayor was trying to attract non tv viewers to visit his city. However, with that said, you do NOT alienate the actress and the show that put Minneapolis on the map to begin with!

BOOOO for that remark from me too! Sooooo, Mr. Hoity-Toity Mayor Rybak thinks the show is tired and gives Minniapolis hackneyed stereotypes. Too bad about him. It's a classic show, with great characters, a great leading actress, and brought his city A LOT of great publicity. IMO he can go eat you-know-what, and I don't mean cake icing! Nobody disses my Mary and this great show! Both still wonderful a generation later.

What a jerk. Nice going insulting America's Sweetheart and one of the state's current representatives (Bachmann).

Everybody, I think he meant that the city has evolved and become more diverse since then.

The show ended over 30 years ago, if the citizens of Minneapolis aren't aware by now that their city has evolved during that time then they never will.
