About 15 years ago or so, I was awake at like 2 in the morning. I turned on the tv and came across this movie called Sidney Shore A Girls best friend. It starred Tony Randall as a lonely man who has the same mundane routine every day. When he goes to the movies, the lady behind him befriends him. Somehow she ends up talking him in to letting her live with him. The lady has a baby, and Randall's character basically raises her, as her mother pursues her career. When the girls about five, his roomate tells him she's moving to another State because she met a man, and she would be taking her daughter with her. Randall's character takes her to court, and explains to the judge that he's the one who raised her, but of course the woman got custody of her. The last scene is so sad. The beginning of the movie has him going to the deli, and then going home to eat it all alone. The last scene he does the same thing, and is back to his sad, and lonely existance.

It's not officially released on video.
Funny thing- both Tony Randalll and Lorna Patterson went on to star in sitcoms that year (1981) based on movies. Patterson in (and as) Private Benjamin and Randall in Love, Sidney. |

I never saw the movie but I did watch Love Sidney regularly. It was a good show.

It does sound like a heart-breaking movie & now I kind of want to see it. Maybe AMC or TCM will show it.

I remember this film reasonably well, especially the scene in which they decide to use the wooden buffet furniture piece for firewood...!
