Heart 99-year-old man marries for the first time

http://www.11alive.com/news/article/...the-first-time

5:37 PM, Jun 24, 2011

ROCHESTER, NY (NBC) - It may have taken nearly a century, but a Rochester, New York man says he's finally found his soul-mate. Gilbert Herrick has just married for the first time -- at age 99!

Herrick retired from the postal service and courageously fought for our country during World War II.

"I was on three invasions -- North Africa, Sicily and southern France," he said.

Herrick earned a purple heart for his bravery but there was always something missing in his real heart.

"Never found the right girl 'til I found her," he said.

She is Virginia Hartman and she's 86. And this was the cupid's arrow - hand-painted china that was on display at their nursing home.

Herrick used to do oil paintings and wanted to meet the artist.

"I kept going back to talk to her," he said. "There's nobody here that I can talk to, so I kept visiting her. It led to a romance."

"His art ability comes out right away and I just thought he's somebody I can talk to," she said.

"She asked if we could have a room to share. And, they said you can only have it if you're married. So, she said let's get married," he said. "And I said yes!"

On June 4, surrounded by friends, family and nursing home staff, they made it official.

"It was a beautiful day. We had a beautiful wedding. A lot of people," he said.

The two are living proof that love has no age and they say they're going to make the most out of the time they have together.

"We both feel we're gonna have a good time no matter what," Virginia said. "So if it's something if we're too frail to do it too bad, we're going to do it anyway."

Besides never having exerienced marriage before, he also noted, "I never got to be nagged. I'm killing two birds with one stone."

He went on to say:

"What were we just talking about?"

Nobody had better balk about gays or lesbians wanting to marry--after all, these people can't pro-create either!!!!!!

What a wonderful story! And just for the record, my mom got married in 2009 and my stepdad was in his 60's-and this is his first marriage! Someone at the wedding came up to me and said "He's been waiting his whole life for her." OMG, I almost cried!
