NOW FEATURING...SPLASDOWN
I love the scene where Howell hits Gilligan with his hat and Gilligan gives
him that look! Why does the Skipper reprimand Gilligan just because the capsule floated off a few feet, was that disastrous? Also, why did he say,"We could have ALL been on the capsule"? I thought the extra people were just scolded for being on there. I would have edited that it it was a flubbed line. I was surprised to hear that the Howells "eloped" in lieu of a big society wedding. Perhaps they didn't go through with the whole thing since Lovey refers to it rather ordinarily as "the time when we eloped," not really the way one would refer to THE wedding day, I think. Lovey says she only wears "Gold Dust No. 5" perfume, yet she has a whole vanity of them in Ep. 8. I always found Ginger's comments about the astronauts fighting over her character in the movie unnecessary and pathetic (if we take Ginger as an actual person, i.e.). How early do you think they had to get up to stowaway? You mean no one, not even the Professor, could have fixed the SOS? What a coincidence, SOL! That's pretty funny. If that worked so well, why wouldn't they try that again, do you think? Does Maryann's comment about wanting to see the astronauts negate MAG? She and Ginger seem like two totally single college girls there. Someone told me the spaceship visibly hovering in the sky is ridiculous. |

I always think that Gilligan's line "move to Mexico city" (in response to the Skipper's implication that the castaways can somehow duplicate the amount of wattage produced by the most populous city in the world) is sarcasm rather than stupidity. The Skipper's idea is ridiculous.
The "SOL" mistake does work better than the backwards "P" in HELP in the pilot episode. And it does make for a funny coincidence that the astronaut has the same name. The Skipper's line, "We all could have been on that capsule" does indeed sound like a flubbed line. And there's a visual and auditory blooper as the Skipper's dropped bamboo tumbler shatters against a rock. The tumbler is obviously made of glass! I love Gilligan's indignant, "What are you doing!" when he catches the Howells stowing away. It's not often that he gets to tell them off! I wonder who gets the unhappy job of cleaning up the lagoon after all of that twisted metal has fallen into it! How horrible for our beautiful lagoon!

When Gilligan kicks the 'S' of SOS (or 'sos' as he calls it) and makes it into an 'L' (because his poor backside is on fire), it's actually the Professor who makes it worse because Skipper kicks it back into an 'S' and then the Professor kicks it further out of shape again. So Gilligan can't be totally blamed for this fiasco, although of course he always is, just as he was blamed in You've Been Disconnected for covering up the wires in case they got wet, which was a GOOD idea not a bad one.
"Move to Mexico City?" is indeed another example of Gilligan's surprisingly quick wit, along with the Gilligan/Skipper exchange from Pass The Vegetables, Please- "Can you see Mary Ann?" "How can I see Mary Ann when she isn't even here?" "The same way you can see the boat!" Skipper always knows he's been outwitted in situations like these. As for the MAGness, even if I was interested in a cute boy I'd go for the chance to ogle some astronauts. Plus, it could be a good way to stir up a little jealousy in said boy if I was having a hard time getting him to notice me. |
