In the earlier episodes, Mary was a bit of a pushover and let people walk all over her because she was too nice to stand up for herself. Later on, she became a little more assertive.

I liked Mary a lot, there wasn't much not to like. Kind, hard working, smart, loyal, attractive, sympathetic, funny...maybe a little bit passive but with all those other qualities who is going to argue?

Well, this is really sorta grasping at straws, but that she could be tooo nice. She should have told the likes of Phyllis and Sue Ann to eff off pretty much from the get go. But she was too much of a lady to do something that overt.

So I guess, nothing really, but felt I should try to pick something. And actually, when push came to shove, Mary could be firm. Like with Sue Ann when she was having that affair with Lars,. Also, the time she tells Ted to shut up on the air. (I almost spit out my soda when I saw that for the first time - so many good scenes in this show

)

That's the PERFECT way to sum up the character of Mary Richards. Even her best friend, Rhoda Morgenstern, would have to agree with you there!!

I had a female friend in college who reminded everyone of Mary Richards. She wasn't an exact physical match (though she was fairly tall and thin, and a pretty gal), but she was a real soft heart when it came to tolerating people of all types, sometimes even types she probably should have given the bum's rush.

She was patient and smart like Mary, too, and seemed to "have it all together", though as her friend I knew she had a lot of fears and insecurities just like everyone else. She also had Mary's ability to make people feel good about themselves, which is a very rare thing.

The world could use a few more "Mary Richards"s!

The kicker is that she always said she'd rather people would compare her to Rhoda!

Lol, my friend Vanessa reminds me of Mary Richards. Not in how she looks, but in the way she acts. She's the innocent one of the group, the one who somehow physically cannot insult other people. If someone is feeling down, she goes out of her way to make them feel better about themselves.

Now I, on the other hand have been compared to Rhoda. Most people is because of the way I dress, and that's fine. Rhoda had an awesome sense of fashion, but my Aunt went out of her way to compare us personality wise. I don't really know how I feel about that. I mean, I don't see it, but still. So tell her she's lucky to be compared to the perfect one.

Yep our Mary was a real lady. Refined with a capital R. I can't even imagine her saying the word s**t - and any one else calling Lou Mr. Grant would sound lame and dorky - but not when Mary does it - addressing her boss this way - even in a roll up your sleeves news room - was just part of her good breeding and manners. Whatta gal!!
