Question Nanette Fabray (Dottie) Should've Been Made A Regular Cast Member! Agree Or Disagree?

Does anybody agree that the Dottie Richards character should've been used more? Especially after Rhoda skipped town? What are your thoughts on her character? Did she deserve to be featured more?

Disagree. I like Nanette Fabray and it would have been cool to see Mary's parents once or twice a season, but Mary was an independant adult and didn't need her parents around as much any more.

Fair enough, although didn't her parents move down the block from her or was I imagining that?

That's what they said, but we never heard from or of them again. I agree with old grouch, Mary's parents didn't fit into the scheme of the show. The program was about Mary Richards and her determination to "make it on her own". A visit from them here and there would've been OK (like at Christmas), but it just didn't make sense to have them around all the time (no offense to Nanette Fabray or Bill Quinn).

On another thread somewhere,a more knowledgeable poster than myself touched on there being some kind of friction offscreen between NF and MTM.

That got me curious to know more, however it does explain why Mary's parents just disappear. Also, in the last time you see either of her parent's, it's the father you only see.

I found it odd that 1. Rhoda's parents were introducted before Mary's and 2. Mary's parent's weren't introduced until Season 3.

I just remembered that after Rhoda left town, it was not long after NF started appearing on One Day at a Time. I know she played Ann Romano's mother, but don't know when she started appearing.
I'm not as into ODAAT like I am with MTM.

NF didn't begin appearing on ODAAT until 1979.

It was implied that a certain guest star didn't get along on the set, and I think it was concluded that it was Nanette Fabray. And yes, the father appeared a few more times after Fabray's 2 appearances.

Wheather or not anybody thinks they should have been re-occuring characters or not, in the storyline they did move to Minneapolis to be closer to Mary, yet they just disappeared, never referred to again. They should have had Mary just casually say they didn't like living there and decided to move back to Rosedale (or wherever they came from).

I always thought Nanette was a great choice to play Mary's mother. They do rather resemble each other.
