TV MTV Cancels The Controversial U.S. Version of "Skins"

MTV Axes Controversial Teen Drama "Skins"
Jun 9, 2011
by Kate Stanhope

MTV has canceled racy teen drama series "Skins" after just one season, Deadline reports.

An adaptation of the popular, award-winning British drama — now in its fifth season in the U.K. — "Skins" stirred up lots of controversy when it premiered in January.

Although the series premiered to an impressive 3.3 million viewers, it quickly shed them. The Season 1 finale pulled in just 1.2 million in March.

Despite the steep decline in viewership, "Skins" was the subject of media scrutiny throughout its run for its graphic and frank depictions of teen drug use and sex.

Because much of the cast was under 18, the Parents Television Council called for an investigation into possible child pornography and exploitation. The Council also called "Skins", "the most dangerous television show for children that we have ever seen."

Over its 10-episode run, "Skins" lost 11 advertisers, including Taco Bell, Wrigley, General Motors, Subway, Foot Locker, H&R Block, L'Oréal, Clearasil and Kraft.

"'Skins' is a global television phenomenon that, unfortunately, didn't connect with a US audience as much as we had hoped," MTV said in a statement.

"We admire the work that the series' creator Bryan Elsley did in adapting the show for MTV, and appreciate the core audience that embraced it."

Good they cancelled it,but the only reason was because they were losing sponsors.Mtv will continue to produce filth that caters to the most ignorant viewers and a black audience.viacom owns both BET and mtv.

The US remake of "Skins" is just one show that every SitcomsOnline member would despise. (besides any show airing on a network that wants to cater to an under-35 demographic.)

don't know if this was intentional but you either said ignorant viewers are black or that it is somehow wrong to cater to a black audience (which MTV doesn't - it simply caters to teens).

Judging by his other comments on here, he doesn't have a high opinion of black people.

Default The last time an unsuccessful attempt was made...

...to adapt a British series was NBC's disastrous "Americanized" version of "COUPLING" in 2003. That virtually destroyed the network's momentum on Thursday nights (and you can blame Jeff "Who, me? I'm just an executive" Zucker for giving it the "green light", when several of his fellow programmers begged him not to attempt it).

I KNEW that an American version of "SKINS" would never succeed. There are some things British TV writers and actors can "get away with" on their own turf- but not in the States.

As for the Parents Television Council, they're the most dangerous "moral organization" ever created for any kind of media. What they tend to think of in terms of "wholesomeness" and "decency" is actually outright censorship...and then try to bully and pressure advertisers and network executives into going along with their agenda, "or else".
**** 'EM!

NBC actually has another U.S. adaptation of a British series coming up soon:

"Prime Suspect" which starred Helen Mirren in the U.K. I'm curious to see on how this will do...

One recent one that did decent was Syfy's adaptation of the U.K.'s "Being Human".

They picked it up for a second season.
