Yeah, I have a suspicion that it was a gag that started out as a silly non-sequitur, and has since taken on a life as its own.

As far as I can remember, I don't think they've made any reference to West's career as an actor. Perhaps Mayor Adam West in Family Guy isn't Adam West, former TV star.

Interesting, although they did make a reference to Batman in one episode and Adam West did voice the character.
