I just watched an episode of Dennis and I wonder what exactly is in that bottle of nerve medicine? I have a feeling its ingredients are similar to vitametavegamin

I suspect it was similar to "The Recipe" which the Baldwin ladies made on The Waltons.

...never failed to earn Joseph Kearns a laugh from the home viewer. You knew the minute Dennis started to drive Mr. Wilson crazier than usual, he'd inevitably cry out, "Martha, my nerve medicine!!!". There's no doubt his "nerve medicine" was "legitimate" {probably the same kind Gladys Kravitz's doctor prescribed to her on 'BEWITCHED"- also from the same studio, Screen Gems}.
I'd like to think there was one point where Mr. Wilson really didn't want to take it, and this brief conversation took place: MR. WILSON: (pleading) But Martha, Dr. Fonda said I didn't have to take that blasted nerve medicine every time Dennis finds his way here! MRS. WILSON: Remember what Dr. Ackerman said...when he found you on the sidewalk after Dennis forgot about that banana peel before you slipped on it....you were practically in hysterics when you heard- DENNIS: (in the distance) HE-Y-Y-Y-Y MR. WILSON!!!! MR. WILSON: (grabbing bottle from Martha's hand, and taking a big swig from it) GREAT SCOTT!!!! MRS. WILSON: You see, dear? You like it!

Mr. Wilson made his own "nerve medicine", there was an episode devoted to this subject, when Mr. Wilson gave a fellow nervous old friend of his a gulp of his nerve medicine. The friend liked it so much that Mr. Wilson explained he made it himself from an old Indian recipe. What were the ingredient were never revealed. Anyone know any old Indians?

What did Mr. Wilson really have to be nervous about? I mean he was retired, owned a home. Most likely the mortgage was paid. Back in those days the cost of homes was so cheap and they probably lived there forever. He had a loving wife. He had financial security, seemed to have a pretty nice, laid back life. So what if the little boy next door was a little annoying. He wasn't a really bad, horrible child. My goodness, these days with the school shootings, drive by shootings, terrorism . I mean come on Mr. Wilson, this was the early 60's, and you didn't even have to get up early and go to work anymore, were you really THAT nervous???? |

He worried about the Cuban Missile crisis which almost brought about a nuclear attack, people forget this. Another big worry was the thought of acting in another of Dennis' school plays, getting handcuffed to the kid during a play, dropping the cue cards and getting his film incorrectly edited, taking a night time picture of a rare night blooming posey... Not to mention, he was about to shuffle off this mortal coil. Hey, he really did have a lot to worry about.

Fred did and I think Mr. Wilson pretty much did too, even my grandfather did. The pants belt would be above the belly near your upper chest. I think this was done not to combat worry, in fact just the opposite, wearing your pants above your belly means your belly isn't being held in by a tight belt. You're free-er to move about and esp. to bend over to tie your shoes. A belt around a prominent belly can be uncomfortable. I am doing such a good job of explaining, I may start wearing my pants up to my neck too!

LOL!! I am literally sitting here cracking up!!!! The old men and their styles (or lack of style back than). Yep, my grandfathers too! Another one was Uncle Charlie from My Three Sons. Not only the pants , but older men on TV back than were always portrayed as grumpy curmudgeons!!

That's a good one. Notice they were doing a bit of a take-off of Gunsmoke, Dennis acting as Chester. I watch Dennis on Sundays, currently nearing the end of the John Wilson final season. I watch practically only DVDs, I don't like putting up with commercials on live TV.

Yes! That epp was good. It had me chuckling! I really should get some DVD's of my favorite old time shows. You are right about there being too many commercials! It's Friday, I am off at 1:00 today, so I can catch the second Dennis episode today at 1:30! My boss is off today, and my work is caught up, so I can pretty much just post here for the next hour!! YAY!!!!
