As I was let off Hwy 101 on Van Nuys Blvd in Sherman Oaks, I knew the first place to look for my angel: Some miles up there was the Church on the Way. So I walked up, unaware that the city blocks in L.A. were long and wide. And finally, there I was--the entrance to the HALLOWED CHAMBERS OF TRUTH, ENLIGHTENMENT, AND FLAXEN-HAIRED, DOE-EYED ACTRESSES!!!!
The Church on the Way, to my suprise, was not the average-sized house of worship like my church back home--it was a MEGAMART CHURCH OF EPIC PROPORTIONS!! A charismatic cathedral whose back rows needed their own zip code! THIS was Lisa's church?? Anxiious to get a glimpse of t.v.'s REAL Golden Girl, I sat and waited in the pews. No such luck. But the pastor there, Pastor Jack Hayford, I found to be a fascinating, eloquent speaker. I found myself immediately at home at this upbeat, vibrant church. It was just a shame I didn't have a certain Golden-Tressed Gal to park my lard biscuits next to. The days that followed that Wednesday I spent getting a lay of the land. It was hot, sunny, and had a sense of liveliness to it. People at the church were super-nice, in this one college group, the leader felt "touched" that I didn't have adequate lodging, so he gave me a voucher for a one-night stay at a hotel on Sepulveda Blvd. What a cool guy! I didn't expect anything like that. Nice Sunday school, complete with a comic singer doing a show, I had imagined that since Lisa was college-aged (24 at the time), she'd naturally come to this thing. Wouldn't it be cool to buy her a cup of coffee and a bagel at the counter by the college group room? She'd think, gee, what a swell guy I was. But I only picked up a greeting card with cats on it at the church bookstore I could send to her later. I hung out with the college group at a park where they played baseball and had a picnic. Heading over to a nearby mall in Burbank, I looked at all the cute little houses around, wondering if Lisa might live in one of them. So I spent that night sitting on the lap of luxury, watching "Alf" and munching on leftover chicken when I decided to write a poem addressed to Lisa describing what I felt my first meeting with her would be like: A glorious, heavenly profound experience that was meant to be--the Bearer of God's love to the Seeker of God's love, the one whose album changed my life with the message of love and forgiveness. "How do you talk to an angel?..." So then as I was making a soda run at the nearby supermarket, I stopped by the front desk and saw flyers for sightseeing in L.A. when one caught my eye--"SEE YOUR FAVORITE NBC SHOWS TAPED LIVE IN HOLLYWOOD!" The card gave a number and name of a company which handled tickets.THAT'S HOW I CAN GET TO SEE HER!!!! |
