Cool Mary Tyler Moore & Dick Van Dyke Choose Who Should Play Themselves in A Remake

The duo are asked who they'd pick to play themselves in a remake of the show, which ran from 1961 until 1966. "I'd probably choose Téa Leoni to play me and Greg Kinnear to play Dick," Mary says. "I don't know if Greg can move like Dick does!"

Dick's pick to play the Rob character is a good one: Jim Carrey.

Well, first of all, no one should even consider a remake because they will all pale in comparison to the originals.

But Carrey is a poor choice, IMHO. He might have the goofiness and the physical comedy down, but he doesn't have the heart. He's all irony and none-too- suble mugging at the camera.

I like Mary's choices better!

Conan O'Brien would make a good Rob Petrie. He is tall and thin like Van Dyke was and he can do physical comedy and be goofy like Dick.

I didn't think about that, but that could be good!

I agree!!! No one should ever even consider remaking this (or any other) classic! no one could fill Dick and Mary's shoes! Or Rose Marie's! Or Maury Amsterdam's! Or Richard Deacon's! Or Carl Reiner's! Or Jerry Paris's! Or Ann Morgan Guilbert's! Or Larry Mathew's!

I agree. Re-make The Dick Van Dyke Show? BLEEECCCHHH!!!!
Why doesn't someone just stand out in the front yard during all their free time for the rest of their lives and try to catch lightning in a bottle?
I understand one reason for re-makes...radio, TV, and movies have been around so long, most everything has been done anyway, so why not...if it worked once?
But come on!

Watch new stuff, sure, but keep re-watching the originals, people! I know there's no longer a "surprise factor", but every classic sitcom has moments that can be appreciated time and again, and laughs that are guaranteed. And there are new things to notice in almost every scene if you view the great shows again (The Honeymooners, The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Bob Newhart Show are my favorites).
Nuance, nuance, nuance!

By the way, in my opinion re-making The Dick Van Dyke Show would be folly of a higher degree, since there's no way to recapture a time, or to recreate the delicious chemistry between Dick and Mary. Just be glad it was caught on film forever!
