Question Edith Bunker: Underrated TV Mom?!?

We All know Edith Bunker to be the doting, lovable housewife to Archie, but where does she rank as a mom? Do you think she was underrated as a TV mother?!?

She wasn't really a TV mom much like Louise Jefferson because both of their kids were already grown when the show premered.

Cool

I think people tend to think of Edith more as Archie's wife than as Gloria's Mom so yes she is underrated as a Mom. If you look at what an intelligent, well spoken, and caring young woman Gloria is you know that Edith was a good mother. (She couldn't have possibly gotten those qualities from Archie!)

Underrated perhaps a litte. But since her child was grown, she seems to have been portrayed more as a wife than a mom. But given her temperament, I'd vote for her as one of the best TV moms ever.

I found Edith to be a caring and loving spirit so in that sense she was a great mom, however.....she wasn't exactly the brightest and I don't mean to be disrespectful, but in some cases Gloria was more of a mother when it came to serious "women" talks. If you all recall, Gloria was the one who told Edith what was happening to her when she was going through the change. In some ways, and again, no disrespect intended, Edith was somewhat childlike in her own way.

I think Edith was an underrated Mom she had plenty of Mother/Daughter moments with gloria during the shows run. My favorite is Edith's 50th Birthday and an older ep where Edith and Gloria are angry with each other when Gloria accuses Edith of catering to Archie and not being her own person.

I recall that episode you are speaking of about Gloria jumping all over Edith for not being her own person. I had a real problem with that episode. Number one....Gloria was always butting her nose into her parents' business/marriage and number two....Gloria had no place to talk because from my prospective, she was always going Mike's way with everything. Whatever he believed, so did she. She grew up in a Christian home (under Edith's influence) but yet when she married Mike, she converted to his atheist ways. So my point is that she had no business telling her mother to start being her own woman when she was far from it herself. There were a few episodes when she tried to be her own woman, but then Mike "put her back in her place" and she let him! Sorry I got off topic.
