That's the only episode I can't bring myself to watch again.

She also bid adieu to her career, sadly.

she did what she thought was best for her at that time in her life and I can't blame her for making that decision. Shelley is a great actress and she's still working and that's what's important.

Point taken, but she could have stayed the entire run and gone out with some glory in the final episode. Obviously, Shelley did come back for one last appearance in the end, but....

While I loved Cheers for it's entire run and I did like Kirstie Alley, the first five years were just magic, IMO.

Agree - the first five years were the best. After Shelley left I stopped watching. I probably tuned in every once in a while, but never watched consistently. I just ordered the DVD for the first five years. Anything with Shelley I just love. I tell you whenever I am watching her in Cheers I have a pencil and paper she had a great vocabulary in that show and that's one of the things I loved about her. Shelley is a great actress and I am glad she's still getting jobs.

Just watched this episode today, even though I knew Diane was leaving I was a bit sad inside.

Great episode though, couldn't think of a better way to wrap up the Diane years.

I continued to watch and enjoy the show myself. Cheers took a cue from M*A*S*H and wisely didn't replace Diane with a similar character. Bringing in Kirstie Alley as a different type character gave the show a new dimension to explore.

I think if they'd gotten a Diane clone, the show would have washed out creatively and I would have turned away.

In the pic you posted, my husband (Stanley K Howard)is standing just to the right and behind Ted Danson -- but not in frame of your pic. He was in several scenes in the bar during the episode, wearing a brown tweed jacket and HUGE glasses like we all wore back then -- LOL!!

Stan brought a book to read when not in a scene, and the entire cast signed it at the wrap party. It was a book about directing film, so they wished him luck and even asked him to remember them when he was famous (which obviously never happened -- YET!! Today, he is an artist, painting in oils)

If I can figure out how to post pics on this thread, I'll put up the images of what they wrote in his book.....

You are so right the first 5 years were the best. I would have like Shelley long to stay on for 2 more years this way I would have 7 years to watch instead of only 5. lol. Then I wonder where would they have gone if she had stayed on? Watching the old shows after she left just leave me wondering, because some of those shows were just lame and I would wonder to myself what would Diane have done if she were still there? The atmostpher would definitely have to be different I really could not see Diane in that setting. I have years 1-5 and I watch them every night. I so love Diane/Shelly/Sam.
