Movie Reviews: Prom
Just to make sure that the tween crowd is also covered at the multiplex this weekend — every other demo seems to be — Disney is rolling out Prom, its latest iteration of the High School Musical formula. The critics are yawning. “Essentially, this feels like a Disney Channel TV show stretched out to fit the big screen,” AP critic Christy Lemire comments. “No one pops out as a major star quite like the actors did in the High School Musical series, but they’re all harmless and good-looking and the school is sufficiently multicultural to make everyone feel comfortable and included.” Writes Michael Phillips in the Chicago Tribune: “Prom may be the same old thing, and squeaky-clean to the point of mild-to-moderate aggravation, but it’s not pushy.” Lou Lumenick in the New York Post says that the movie: “is so strenuously inoffensive it makes Disney’s High School Musical look almost racy by comparison.” Virtually every critic remarks that the film amounts to a collection of clichés, but Neil Genzlinger in the New York Times writes: “Here’s the thing: There are new tweeners every year. To them, the characters and plot devices in this perfectly competent film might well seem fresh.” -IMDB News |
