The company releasing season 1 of Car 54, Where Are you? addresses their reasoning for putting the episodes in a seemingly "random" order on the discs.
"Shanachie Entertainment: Hey Mike. Thanks for the feedback. Actually, after spending time with some Car 54 historians and buffs it was determined that the most attractive presentation would be to have the episodes ordered by popularity. Of course this is all subjective...but the good news is that ALL of the episodes are there! Hope you are enjoying..." |

Personally I think this order sucks. I want them in production order (but Broadcast order would have been okay, too). I'm glad the season's out at all but this is insane to put the episodes in this kind of order.

I never heard of this happening before, with a tv show dvd release! Kind of strange they would do this. I guess its not the worst thing in the world though. Are all the episodes from season 1??

I agree that "ordered by popularity" is extremely dumb, although I am glad to FINALLY have this on DVD!
Not real happy with the way the discs are packaged either, in the cardboard fold-out and "spring loaded" slots for the discs... yuck! From the publicity photos, it "looked" like a plastic snap case. :-( |

...all they'd have to do is consult the epguides.com, ctva.biz or tv.com websites, print the list, and take it from there.

This seems to be the first tv series, (sitcom or other) this company has put out. They mostly handle music and documentaries.

I have to say that is the dumbest reason I have ever heard. I am also not too thrilled with the packaging. I have never come across a dvd set being stored the way these dvds are. I had one hell of a time getting the dvds off so finally when I did I just put them in a 4 disc tray case. Much easier getting out the dvds then what they was put in IMO.
I am happy this show finally made it to dvd. This is one show I never thought would make it. |

Maybe Schanache will release some other classic shows. We need another company, as Shout! can't release everything, and the major studios don't care!

I also have to agree, this order is totally whacked out. And what 1/2 butted reasons they give. First off, who's to say what the "favorites" order is, one person's will be different from another. This is nuts, I was at first tempted to not buy this set just for the lousy order they put it in, but this series was so great I will buy anyway. I hope this idiot company will learn how to put out a TV series right, and that's in broadcast episode guide order. Sounds like a bunch of amateur nuts running this company, they need to do this the right way or don't bother.

Absolute stupidity and disregard for common sense to produce this series in random episode order. I'm returning the set to Amazon. Money wasted.

I received my dvd set yesterday, and have watched the first 5 episodes of the series. I have to keep changing the disks so I can see them in order. Sure is ridiculous I have to do that. I agree that it makes no sense for them to be in random order. For one thing, Al Lewis plays different characters at first before he's a cast regular.
Still glad the series was released on dvd though. Another early '60's show I'm watching for the first time, and loving!!

I picked this up last week and started watching it yesterday. The order totally sucks but its fun seeing this show again. Reminds me of the old days of Nick at Nite. Also I had forgotten how outrageously funny this show is.

For any other series, this would be an issue for me. But Car 54's own internal continuity isn't just screwy, it's non-existent. Granted, that's part of the charm, but if I hadn't heard about this beforehand I'd likely have had no idea that the episodes were out of order when watching the DVDs. And I'm guessing most viewers would be in the same boat, unless they've got the episode guide sitting right next them or an extremely good memory.
Just my $0.02. |
