Ok I was born in 1980 so I'm just wondering.
Mel is consistently "roughing up" people like grabbing them, throwing them out of his diner, grabbing them up out of a chair and throwing them out just because they might SAY something he doesn't like. Sometimes he'll even grab the waitresses, I remember once he grabbed Vera's arm and squeezed it HARD! TODAY if you did that you'd get arrested or fined for ASSAULT espcially if you owned a restaurnt and was getting physcial with your costumers over just stuff they SAY. What Im wondering is, in the 70s did this happen and did people just let that kind of thing go OR was it just done on this show for comedy, b/c today I know you can just threated to rough someone up or threaten to get physcial with them and you can get fined for assault. |

The '70s were different as there was less threat of someone being charged with assault, child abuse or sexual harassment, etc.
I was in grade school in the mid-'70s to early '80s and many times our class witnessed a teacher grabbing a student and forcing them into their seat or even smacking them on the butt when they were up out of their seat looking over another person's test paper, etc. Kids were taught to be respectful and most times, if a child complained to the parents about it, the parents would say they (their kid) probably deserved for acting out. Male bosses were not afraid to make suggestive comments to their female employees/secretaries either and women were more accepting of it (within reason of course--a harmless comment about one's appearance can be blown way out of proportion these days). Things didn't begin to change until the mid-'80s when it seemed everyone began to get Litigation Fever. So yes, times were different back then and things were like that, although on shows like ALICE, the situations were obviously exaggerated for comedic effect. |
