Default The theatrical movie....

...was the result of the unexpected popularity of the TV series...and if you weren't around at the time, you'll have very little understanding about the impact "BATMAN" on virtually every facet of media during the first half of 1966 (for one thing, it inspired CBS to create a virtual "all-superhero" Saturday morning lineup that fall, spotlighting "THE NEW ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN", as well as the introduction of "SPACE GHOST"). 20th Century-Fox, the studio producing it for ABC, decided to "cash in" on the entire phenomenon by making a "quickie" movie [thrown together so fast, Julie Newmar wasn't available, with Lee Meriwether assuming her role as "Catwoman"], releasing it during that summer. It's a "roller coaster" of a film- and unlike the TV version, it has no "cliffhangers" to get in the way of the action. ZOWIE!!!!

I presume everyone here knows about the FUBAR that keeps the TV Show from getting an "Official" release on DVD, so I won't delve into that, for those of you who wonder why the Movie is available on DVD it's because it was also shown as in in-flight Movie on various Airlines in its day. There's some kind of Clause in the Contract regarding In-Flight Movies that created a "Loophole" that resulted in this Movie being exempt from the Red Tape that is keeping us from getting the Series on DVD.

I really liked Lee Meriwether as Catwoman. Having her in there makes the movie much more worth watching to me. So along with Newmar, that makes 3 ladies who played Catwoman around that time, the other being Eartha Kitt.

Not to mention, 1966 was also the debut of Hanna-Barbera's The Space Kidettes on NBC, The Original Mission: Impossible on CBS and The Original Star Trek on NBC Starring William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy and speaking of which, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. was also in its 3rd Season during the fall of '66

Still a huge Batman fan after all these years. My dad used to have (probably still does) the entire fall 1967 ABC promo featuring Batman and Robin as hosts. It is on 16 mm tape. We would watch it all the time.
