Along with the Gran Torino aka "striped tomato", that sweater seemed to be one of his trademarks.

Good question. Even though the cardigan is a Starsky trademark, I believe Paul Michael Glaser was seen only three times w/ the cardigan during the TV movie pilot and series.

TV movie pilot, Terror on the Docks (#1.12), and Running (#1.20)

In 2004 he appeared with a copy as Starsky for two TV commercials w/ David Soul.

Starsky & Hutch, and Starsky & Hutch 2 (canceled)

In 2003-04 the Starsky character continued wearing the cardigan in video games.

I guess it wasn't the case here, but we do know that some series standardized the outfits of the main players in order to be able to reuse stock footage, to save money. That's why the Bonanza cast began always wearing the same clothes -- when you saw Little Joe riding along on horseback in a distant shot for example, with his green shirt and other earthtone clothes, chances are the footage came from an earlier episode. Sharp eyes can detect differences though (black leather gloves and longer hair of the later years can be noticeably absent).

Some alert fans have spotted important inconsistencies in this type of footage reuse -- for example, McGarrett's Mercury cruiser on the original Hawaii Five-O could change from a 4-door car to 2-door in the same episode...!
