Question Veronica Rooney

In the 3rd season of Archie Bunker's Place Anne Meara very abruptly left the show. Why did she do so? Does anyone know? if anyone has information regarding why she left please let me know.

Apparently she, like Balsam lived on the East Coast and tired of the commute.

"But missing will be Anne Meara as that tough old gal cook, Veronica Rooney. Seems Miss Meara, after a couple of years among the pots and pans and one liners, wanted to return to the East Coast (as did Martin Balsam) where she and hubby Jerry Stiller live and work."

"Archie Bunker's Place" had scored sixth in the week's Nielsen ratings and he was pleased with plans for the show's fourth season on CBS. What made him less than mellow was the handling of the new series. "Gloria." in which Sally Struthers goes solo as Archie's daughter. It seems that the producers of Gloria" made no effort to seek O'Connor's advice on the show. Nor did they accede to his suggestion that the series be taped at Metromedia Studio, where O'Connor has played Archie Bunker in the current series and the previous "All in the Family." "If we were at the same studio, then I could pay an occasional visit to 'Gloria' and Sally could come on my show." he said. "But they decided to work at Universal. I would have been willing to move out to Universal, even though I've been comfortable working at the same place all these years. But they don't seem interested. "Well, I wish 'em luck. I own a small piece of the series, so it's to my advantage if it succeeds." O'Connor turned to a more pleasant topic the new season of "Archie's Place " "It'll be pretty much what we've been doing," he said. "Archie may have some new dates. Last year he dated a Puerto Rican woman and it became a hot romance until she took him home to her family. Naturally. Archie insulted everyone. She may be back, but we're not planning any new characters. We wait and see if they work, then we keep them on. Bill Quinn (the blind Mr. Van Ranseleer ) started that way. "Anne Meara, who played the cook Veronica, won't be back. O'Connor said, for the same reason Martin Balsam dropped out. Both are confirmed New Yorkers and couldn't tolerate the commute to California. O'Connor continues to keep a proprietary eye on "Archie's Place." meeting with producer Joseph Gannon and the writers to approve story ideas "When I see the script. I make my own additions, changing scenes, putting a crisis in. punching up the jokes." O'Connor said. "I am paid and hired as story consultant and am a member of the Writers Guild. " With "Archie Bunker's Place" still high in the ratings, the series could continue on and on. That seems to suit Carroll O'Connor "I don't think we'll ever run out of stories, as long as we stay on the track of life." he said. "The show is best when Archie is dealing with ordinary situations, as he always does in a horrendous way He can take the smallest matter and turn it into a giant problem."

I guess the show could not have been shot in New York City, since most of the cast was from New York City. Carrol O'Connor, Jean Staspleton, Danielle Brisebois, Jason Wingreen as well as Meara and Balsam are from New York.

Why would they dislike California? California then was a paradise, and it was never cold or dirty there like back in NYC.

I'm guessing it was easier to fly an actor or two in from NYC than it was to relocate Tandem.
