When you talk about biggest pop culture weddings, do you think Rhoda's wedding should be included?

Here's the tale of the tape....

Having experienced Rhoda Morgenstern’s (Valerie Harper) dating woes on Mary Tyler Moore for four seasons, audiences were thrilled when she not only landed a steady beau (David Groh) on her own sitcom’s first season but married that fall. This episode became one of the media sensations of the time (Harper and Moore were even featured on that week’s cover of Time), seen by some fifty-million viewers. Also on hand are some of Rhoda’s friends from Minneapolis, including Mary and Lou (Edward Asner), and, much to her chagrin, self-involved Phyllis (Cloris Leachman). Highlighted by some on-location shooting in New York.

The episode was watched by more than 50 million Americans.

As far as primetime tv shows it had to be #1. People who didn't even watch Rhoda had to have known about that wedding. I think the reason Rhoda fell in the ratings so much was because of the divorce. People felt like they were scammed.

That's exactly right Sonny! The list chooses Luke & Laura of General Hospital, Monica & Chandler from Friends and Jim & Pam from the Office....but no Rhoda & Joe???

Well, keep in mind, the producers of Rhoda did not actually want Rhoda to be married in the first place. The storyline was forced upon them by CBS president Robert Wood and his vice president of programming, Fred Silverman. Indeed, even though the viewers seemed to be satisfied with the direction the show was taking, the producers found it difficult to write scripts featuring a happily married Rhoda, often finding themselves instead writing episodes showcasing Nancy Walker's comedic performance as neurotic, overbearing Ida, or focusing on Brenda's problems including her on-again, off-again relationship with accordion player Nick Lobo (Richard Masur). Eventually, they came to the conclusion that Rhoda's appeal came from her status as an insecure single woman. Even Wood and Silverman admitted that they made a mistake when they forced the storyline on the writers.
