Default Norman Lear must have been a huge fan Esther Rolle by the way she was written out in

1977. The viewing public wasn't informed that she wasn't coming back to the show until September of 77 right before the season started. It was also mentioned that she was released from her contract because of a reported illness and that her name would be kept alive on the show for that season. So basically the door was left open for her to return by Lear if she ever decided to come back-lol

All this time I thought sher left because she was ANGRY with the direction of the show.

Info from Jet issue of September 1, 1977

Solomon, she did leave because of the direction of the show. That "illness" news was nothing but spin control.

But my point was he still left the door open for her to return. He never wrote her COMPLTELY OUT of the show.

Of course, to kill off both parents would be too much.

I recall hearing Esther Rolle left the series, because she was displeased in things that happened with the show. One thing that sticks out was Jimmie Walker's character J.J. being so much of the focal point, when the show was supposed to be based around Florida and her family. So I definitely believe she was angry, but its possible after taking some time away she missed the show and decided to return. Just a hunch...
