Somewhere Det. Nate Moretta is smiling: TNT is thisclose to renewing Southland for a fourth season, sources confirm to me exclusively.

The little cop drama that could — which TNT famously rescued from NBC’s scrap heap — averaged a solid 2.9 million viewers for its just-wrapped third season, up 6 percent over season 2. The show also garnered some of the best reviews of its entire run, with much of the praise aimed at series stars Shawn Hatosy and Michael Cudlitz. (I’ll be shocked if Warner Bros. doesn’t mount a major Emmy campaign for the pair.)

The cable net is still hammering out an exact episode count for the fourth season, but insiders say it will once again be in the 10-episode ballpark.

TNT Renews "Southland" for Season 4

"Southland" fans, put down those petitions --
TNT has renewed the critically acclaimed cop drama for a fourth season.

The gritty, realistic series, which takes an intimate look at life for the officers and detectives of the LAPD, has been given 10 more episodes for Season 4.

After a bumpy start on NBC and subsequent move to TNT, the series averaged 2.9 million viewers this season, up 6% compared to the Season 2.

In a statement, executive vice president and head of programming for TNT Michael Wright said:

"'Southland' has been acknowledged by many critics as one of the sharpest, most entertaining and most authentic dramas on television today. John Wells, Chris Chulack and their teams created a brilliant roller coaster ride this season, with countless riveting scenes and unforgettable character arcs.

We are extremely proud to have 'Southland' on TNT and to bring it back for a fourth season."

No production schedule or premiere dates have been announced yet, but expect to see more "Southland" in early 2012.
