Default Do you think Game Show Network has jumped the shark?

I was wondering what do you think about Game Show Network? Do you think its gotten away from airing classic shows and into the reality stage? What do you think of the programming overall? Would you like to see more old tv game shows or remakes of classic shows?

GSN has jumped the shark ever since it went from being Game Show Network to now GSN and not to mention, they've crunched the credits, too

I think they need to let other networks air reruns of Game Shows like they did back in the day

CBN/FAM, USA, etc.

It's a shame @ what GSN has become, I use to watch it all the time, but ever since they started bringing in Carnie Wilson, Jerry Springer and ever since they renewed Catch 21 and ever since they started rerunning Deal or No Deal and ever since they brought back 1 vs. 100

I just gave up on it completely

I mean, I liked the 1st Season of Catch 21, but then, the 2nd Season, it got terrible, IMO

and as for 1 vs. 100, NBC made a HUGE Mistake cancelling the show and GSN is doin' a TERRIBLE job w/the show

Deal or No Deal - 1 word OVERRATED!!

Here are my top 3 best and worst eras of GSN since getting the channel in September 1997:

BEST:
1. April 15, 2002-June 15, 2003: This was when Bert Convy's Win, Lose, or Draw & Peter Marshall's Hollywood Squares debuted on the schedule, and original shows that were actually fun to watch (such as Lingo, Russian Roulette, Friend or Foe?, and Cram) premiered during this time.

2. April 4, 2005-January 6, 2008: During this time, GSN brought out several classics not shown in years including Bill Rafferty's Blockbusters and Card Sharks, Password Plus, Super Password, and To Tell the Truth 90.

3. October 11, 1997-April 17, 1998: Yes, the Dark Period. There were much more classics on the schedule than you think, including WOF and J! (both from the 1992-93 seasons), three Dick Clark Pyramids ($20K, $25K, and $100K), Tic Tac Dough, Joker's Wild, Hot Potato, Go!, Family Feud 94, and luckily, The Price Is Right (Barker and Kennedy versions) as well.

WORST:
1. March 15, 2004-April 3, 2005: Kenny vs. Spenny, Fake-A-Date, Vegas Weddings Unveiled. Need I say more?

2. November 2009- Having all post-1998 shows on the weekends does not sway me, sorry. The only original show I care for right now is 1 vs. 100 with the lovely Carrie Ann Inaba.

3. April 4, 2000-May 25, 2001: This was when GSN lost the rights to TPIR, and there was far too much Newlywed Game on the schedule, and weird originals such as DJ Games. Only saving graces during this time were WOF (1989-90 season), J! (1996-97 season), and Hollywood Showdown was okay to watch as well.

In this thread, a poster mentions GSN's Dark Period. Wikipedia also mentions it but I dont think it says what it is. Btw, if anything, do you think GSN is in a dark period now with newer shows, credits that are cut etc.?

Default I believe GSN's "dark period"...

...started around the time they began scheduling repeats of "THE AMAZING RACE" overnight, effectively scuttling the last of their "Late Night Black and White" kinnies of shows like 'WHAT'S MY LINE?", "I'VE GOT A SECRET", "TO TELL THE TRUTH", "PASSWORD", "THE PRICE IS RIGHT", et. al. Repeats of "THE AMAZNG RACE", even at 3am(et) in the morning, were not what viewers wanted to see. And then, GSN added repeats of NBC's "DOG EAT DOG" (WHY?????) and {ugh} "SPY TV" [Ali Landry was the worst hostess of ANY game/reality show I've ever seen- every time she opened her mouth, her intellect fell out!].

Remember their ambitious Saturday evening lineup of "big" games a few years back, with "live" segments inbetween? That didn't last long....

I've also noticed that GSN has a habit of changing its evening schedule every three to four months or so. That's not very encouraging to people who expect some kind of "continuity" every once in a while....

GSN used to be on my TV whenever I needed something to have in the background. Probably between late 2008 and late 2009. The channel now is completely unwatchable. I have no idea who decided to take over, but once they started that awful show with the daughter of the Beach Boys, I gave up. I've seen what they are doing now and it is hilarious.

Just air old Game Shows. God. How difficult is that?

GSN has long jumped the shark/boned the fish by now, IMO.

It jumped when:

- March 2004, Game Show Network becomes...GSN, originally calledthe Network of Games and began airing reality garbage such as The Amazing DIS-GRACE, Kenny v. Spenny, Dog Eat Dud, Vegas Weddings, Fake-a-Date w/ a washed-up loser from another stupid dating reality show, Poker Show galore and the penultimate crunching of the credits, not to mention even speding up some of the shows, too.

- Though 2006-08 or so saw influxes of classic game shows resurfacing.

- The reruns abuse of more 2000s game shows as well as too many reruns of all these million-dollar game shows.

The Dark Period was when GSN lost all the rights to the Goodson-Todman Library of shows.

And during that time they were showing game shows from the Barry-Enright Library (i.e., The Joker's Wild, Tic Tac Dough, Bullseye, Hot Potato, and some obscure shows most non-mega game shows fans would've never heard of such as Break the Bank (1976-77), The Hollywood Connection (1977-78), the Bob Stewart Library (The existing original $10,000 Pyramid eps., the $20,000 Pyramid, Jackpot!, Chain Reaction w/ Bill Cullen, GO! among shows), more of the Chuck Barris Library (other shows besides The Newlywed Game and The Dating Game such as The Gong Show, $1.98 Beauty Show, (The New) Treasure Hunt among shows.

It's virtually unwatchable now, and Sherri Shepherd is hands down the worst Newlywed Game host ever, so boring. Even the couples they choose to be on the show are boring. The only game show I liked was the revamped Whammy with Todd Newton, who's probably the best of the current crop of hosts they've had.

I love that description that you gave about the shows. Obviously, you didnt like them. I can see your point but at least they stayed on the ball by showing game shows. Not very good ones but its something. If I ran Game Show Network, sorry GSN, I'd pay, hell I'd overpay to get The Price Is Right and other old, great game shows. If that means overpaying the Goodson-Todman Library so be it!!!

If it's about those reality shows then yes I absolutely disliked them, especially Spy TV and Next ActionAction and the UN-American Dream Derby, one of the very worst reality show bombs GSN ever made.

But the classics as well as some of GSN's Originals such as Russian Roulette, Lingo (the Chuck Woolery version), Whammy!, Catch-21 (the 1st few seasons) will always rule!

Oh I forgot that during GSN's 1st Dark Period they also showed the Merv Griffin Library w/ vintage 1980s Jeopardy! a few eps. from the short-lived 1978-79 version of Jeopardy!, Super Jeopardy! and vintage Wheel of Fortune (the 1st 2 seasons from the Shopping Era, 1983-84; 1984-85) as well as Headline Chasers (Wink Martindale's 1st show he created (and also hosted at that time) since leaving Tic Tac Dough in 1985).

And some of those horrible reality shows make even the old-school worst game shows look good.
