Movie Reviews: The Lincoln Lawyer


With The Lincoln Lawyer, Matthew McConaughey is finally getting some recognition for his acting ability instead of his abs.





Indeed Manohla Dargis of the New York Times is so astonished with his performance in the movie that she begins her review of it this way:

“What happened — did Matthew McConaughey roll out of bed one morning and decide that, after smiling through one too many schlocky movies, playing the pretty boy opposite Sandra-Kate-Jennifer, he wanted to do something decent?

Not great, mind you, just solid and satisfying.”





Betsy Sharkey in the Los Angeles Times writes that in this movie, McConaughey displays:

“a maturity not seen in his other work, a more nuanced performance as the actor exposes the uncertainty inside the smooth sarcasm, the decency behind the grifter’s smile.”





And Ty Burr in the Boston Globe suggests that moviegoers are also going to be surprised by McConaughey’s performance.

“The Lincoln Lawyer is better than you think,” he writes, “but only because what you’re thinking probably can’t be printed in a family newspaper. Admit it, when you hear the phrase ‘a Matthew McConaughey movie,” your expectations slip into the basement, yes? Yes.”





Roger Moore in the Orlando Sentinel praises the performances of the other actors as well, particularly Marisa Tomei, Michael Pena and John Leguizamo.
