Some of her stuff was cute. I think I liked more of her things in the early seasons rather than towards the end of the show.

Mary's clothing seemed to mirror Mary very well: immaculate, smart, tasteful, demonstrating consideration and forethought. While Mary neverlooked liked she stepped right off of Vogue, it wasn't her intention. She still looked very sharp to me.

To me, a lot of the clothing of the 1970's was really fugly. Polyesters, plaid everything, clothes that to us in the 21st Century doesn't seem to go together.
For example, the advertisement for the box sets above, look at the lower right picture of Mary. She is wearing some wide lapel blouse under a (again) completely fugly outer jacket with four pockets. Or the group photo with the funky red pantsuit and (again) the huge collars. Plaid was in. How many times did one see Murry and especially Ted wear those fugly trousers. Everyone in that era dressed fugly. There is a discussion (or was) here on the ugly 70's clothes on "The Bob Newhart Show". Again, everyone dressed like that, including common folk like us. Look at old photos from the 1970's. The clothes will make anyone go, "Yikes!" I personally think that a lot of designers were doing cocaine and just let anything fly, and the people who bought the clothes didn't know any difference. Probably 1970's fashion was a big experiement, in any case, thankfully, it did not last. The funny thing is, probably especially for the women, that the clothes were expensive designer labels, especially with Mary and Rhoda. An average middle class office working woman could not afford those clothes. Still, next to the fine looking and well dressed Laura Petrie of the Kennedy era, bu the time Nixon came along, fashion went to hell. |

With Mary's figure, she looked great in everything. It didn't matter what she wore, it all looked good on her.
