Default Which do you prefer: The Addams Family or The Munsters, and WHY?

I know it's a little unfair to post this topic at The Addams Family message board, but I figured that there might be a few Munsters fans who come here.

Personally, I prefer The Addams Family much more than The Munsters. I just think that the writers of the The Addams Family were much more creative in putting the show together...the characters and theme song ROCK!

Anyone else.....which do you prefer and why?

I used to watch both shows but prefered the Addams Family. The writing seemed a little smarter than what was on the Munsters. Gomez and Morticia were like forerunners of the Goth movement of the past 10 yrs or so. Lily and Herman, though funny, were more like the Beverlyhillbillys of the spooky world. The Addams had a peculiar but hip sense of humour for the 60s.

I grew up watching both too, but if I had to choose my vote goes to The Munsters. I laughed louder with the Munsters. I do like the Adams family especially Lurch, but I had to choose.

This is basically one of those Apples versus Oranges things.
though my vote would also go to The Munsters, just because
Fred Gwynn as Herman was hysterically funny.

When I was watching the shows I much preferred the Addams Family. They were classier and "ookier."

The Munsters were more commonplace. But through the years I've come to love those "ordinary" folks.

One of the things I really loved about the Addamses was that they knew they were different, and revelled in that fact. It seemed that the Munsters never knew they were different.

I'm certainly not the biggest fan of either one of them, but I have always liked The Munsters better because it was just more flagrantly funny. While both series had their running jokes, the Addams Family's was too repetitive-- the "thing" and that noose to "ring" for Lurch would always appear right there wherever the action happened to be. And even though I never saw ALL the AF eps, Gomez hearing 'French' and kissing up the lady's arm got sickening. How many times can you laugh at the same thing?

But for me it really comes down to this: The Addams Family was more of a satire, and the Munsters was more of a spoof. And since the only reason I would watch such a show is for laughs, the spoof wins it.

The Addams family. It's kooky and funnier. It has that sardonic wit that I like. The theme, I agree is cooler.

One more thing I agree with whoever said The Addams Family was satire, that's what made it funnier than The Munsters. It was so cleverly done.

Thumbs up Addams Family!!!

I have thought about this, and I liked the Addams Family show better. The characters where way more cooler, and they had some great storylines. I loved Morticia and Gomez's romance, I loved Pugsley's blank stare and Lurch! Lurch was the coolest organ player I know! LOL.

Same here! The Addams Family also seemed a bit more sophisticated than the Munsters. I also loved the house & furnishings. When I was a child I remember seeing Ted Cassidy dressed up as Lurch. He was autographing pictures at the local mall. He was scary looking,,,,,with his towering height and gruesome makeup!

Growing up, I liked the Munsters better, for some reason...my brother and sister both preferred the A Family...

I thought both theme songs were great...

Seeing both of them as an adult, I think that the Addams family is probably a better written show. Fred Gwynne is my favorite individual character, he played Herman perfectly...

Both shows had a lot of imagination, and certianly there hasn't been anything like them on TV since...

I see the Munsters now and then on TV Land, but a few weeks ago, a station (I think it was Hallmark) ran a weekend marathon of the Addams Family, and those shows were just hysterical...

I just think the A F is better written than the Munsters, although both shows were performed excellently by all of the actors...

Still, I can watch pretty much any episode of either show, any time it's on...I love 'em both...they don't make em like that anymore!
