Movie A Third "Tomb Raider" Flick in the Works

Lara Croft and Tomb Raider look to get back to the big screen (again)
Los Angeles Times
March 8, 2011

Tomb Raider remains among the most popular video games in history.
But is there room for another movie?

Graham King, the producer behind hits The Departed and The Town, will take another crack with Lara Croft.

The producer announced Monday that his GK Films has acquired Tomb Raider movie rights from game company Square Enix. King aims to have a new film about the artifact-hunting heroine in theaters within two years.

No writer or director has yet been hired.

It's not the first time a Tomb Raider reboot has been attempted.

Warner Bros. and Sherlock Holmes producer Dan Lin began developing a new version of the game in 2009, when the studio had acquired a stake in game publisher Eidos, which has since been acquired by Japanese video game publisher Square Enix.

The idea at the time was to revamp the character in a new way, reimagining her origins and beefing up her love interest. The film didn't get off the ground, and rights reverted from Lin and Warner Bros. to Square Enix.

Since the original video game came out in 1996, Tomb Raider and its eight sequels have sold 35 million copies around the world.
A new video game sequel is scheduled to be released this year.

Paramount Pictures released two Tomb Raider films, helping make a star out of Angelina Jolie.

The first film, 2001's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, grossed more than $270 million worldwide.
The 2003 sequel Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life grossed more than $156 million worldwide

It seems that "Tomb Raider" is one of the few successful video game movie franchises ever. I just hope "Grand Theft Auto" becomes a movie...it would be rated 'R', but it may be a good Video Game-turned-Movie...and so would "Sonic the Hedgehog"....

It would be good if she comes back.

If they are working on rebooting the films, like they are with the games, then I don't think she will be coming back.

There will never be a Grand Theft Auto film because of movie rights issues relating to the Ron Howard 1977 film Grand Theft Auto.

It's possible they can get around it by calling the movie GTA, but there hasn't been any serious movement on a Grand Theft Auto film for years.

Oscar-Nominated Writing Team Sets Sights on Rebooting 'Tomb Raider' Franchise
By John Mitchell
Posted May 5th 2011

Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, the screenwriting team who scored an Oscar nomination for their work on Alfonso Cuaron's 2006 film Children of Men, and co-wrote Iron Man and this summer's Cowboys & Aliens, have signed on to take the reigns of the reinvigorated Tomb Raider franchise.

GK Films acquired the rights to the popular video game series in March and soon after announced they would like to have a rebooted film ready for release by 2013, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

In a statement, GK announced its first Tomb Raider film would be an "origin story for Lara Croft that solidifies her place alongside Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor in the pantheon of great female action heroes." Lofty!

Hopefully this one wont have Angelina Jolie in it. God I can't stand her. Not only is she ungodly ugly she is horrible at acting.
