Confused Was It True That Betty FORD Was Extremely Drunk On The Set Of TMTMS When She Guested?

I heard a rumore that Betty Ford was so drunk on the set on Moore's show that they had to do several reshoots and pieced together her guest appearance. The rumor was Betty Ford was so embarrassed by her actions it led her to seek treatment and start the now infamous Betty Ford Clinic!?!

True Or A Bunch of Hogwash?

I don't know about how she was on the set, but I do know she didn't first get treatment until several years after the Fords were out of the White House. The family staged an intervention for her and thats when she got help. This became the inspiration for the clinic, a few years after that.

Hmmm, interesting. I am trying to look through archives to find anything about her appearance and so far, nothing...

Ironically, Mary Tyler Moore was a patient at The Betty Ford Clinic in 1984!

Go to www.mtmshow.com. There I found under frequently asked questions that she indeed was drunk. They really don't give any details excent that it was an extremely unhappy period of her life.

Not to mention very sad. I do give Betty Ford a lot of credit, however, for sharing her experiences with both breast cancer and substance abuse, which were not discussed out in the open back then. Since then, she has helped so many people just by sharing her story (and her clinic, too, of course). God bless her!!

I don't believe she was drunk while on set. But I know she did have a problem. Yet again, another reason to pick up Mary's second book, this little piece is mentioned in it.

Wheather or not she was drunk on the set of TMTMS, maybe we should focus on what happened in the subsequent years. Today Mrs. Ford is considered one of our most influencial First Ladies of all time, due to her candor on Substance abuse, Breast cancer, and her stand on womens' rights, among other issues.

I never see the episode replayed. Wonder if this could be part of the reason. Does anyone remember seeing the ep and if she seemed a little tipsy? (usually alcoholics can hide it somewhat from people unless it's brought to their attention).

Indeed - she brought a lot of issues to the forefront that were not spoken of in the public back in those days.

I've never heard that before, but I suppose it's possible. I wouldn't refer to the Betty Ford Clinic as "infamous" because it's actually a very positive place that's helped many people. There's nothing negative about it. Mary Tyler Moore herself is a testament to that. She owes her sobriety to that place. And I agree with markway895.
