Cool Sammy Hagar Believes He'll Reunite With Van Halen

Rocker Sammy Hagar is convinced he'll return as Van Halen's singer, despite waging a war of words with his former bandmates since they reformed with original vocalist David Lee Roth and blasting band leader Eddie Van Halen in his new memoirs.

The singer fronted the band after Roth left in the mid-1980s and hit the charts with songs including Why Can't This Be Love and When It's Love. He parted company with Van Halen in 1996, and has never been invited back for subsequent reunions.

Van Halen are now back in the studio with Roth, recording new material, but Hagar isn't giving up hope he'll one day reteam with Eddie Van Halen and his brother Alex.

He tells Rolling Stone magazine, "I'd say it's up there around 90 percent. I would love to make another record with Van Halen.

"If Eddie was totally cool and was back to the guy I used to know, or a new guy, not the guy I knew the last time... I wouldn't do it if he was like that. It's below zero, minus zero. But if Eddie really got his life together, which it seems he has judging by the pictures I've seen, then definitely."

But he accepts it won't be soon: "Right now (there's) zero chance. When my book comes out, zero for a while. But someday, before we all die, f**k yeah."

Bring back the REAL unsung hero of Van Halen - Michael Anthony!!! Have him return to the bass and backing vocals and move Wolfie over to the keyboards.

Well, Sammy did the reunion tour with the band in 2004 so I'm not sure what the article means by "has never been invited back for subsequent reunions"?

I don't think that will ever happen since the brothers had been trying to force Mike out since 1997.

I don't know about the whole idea behind reunions. I think it's irritating that so many classic bands get back together and play the usual favorites and totally skip anything new that they may have. I read that Eddie Van Halen is not in a hurry to make a new Van Halen album because he says that several years ago, when he introduced a new song in concert, the audience reception was rather laid back and not enthusiastic. Seems like people just want the "old" hits and not be forced to hear something new, no matter how good it is.

Actually, it goes back even farther. It's been said that Eddie wanted to fire Mike in 1981 and bring in Billy Sheehan. In an interview from that period, Eddie griped that Mike "Doesn't pull his weight." I don't know why Eddie felt that way, because Mike has always been there and done a good job.

When VH reunited with Sammy for the ill-fated 2004 tour, Sammy had to lobby to get Mike on board as the bassist. He had to sign away his songwriting credits in order to do the tour. Sammy and Mike were essentially paid employees of Eddie and Alex for that tour.

^ Disgusting. I haven't heard any negative comments about Michael Anthony from anyone aside from the Van Halens.

One long-time band that bucked that trend was the Bee Gees. In the later years, their concerts just expanded to include the new songs - and the audiences embraced the new stuff!!!! Sure, every Bee Gees concert from 1977 on had to include "Stayin' Alive" and "How Deep Is Your Love", etc. - but they were not just rehashing the glory days. The Brothers Gibb experimented with different styles, and to be sure, not all the experiments worked. But they TRIED. The Bee Gees were still writing, producing and performing until Maurice's sudden, unexpected passing in January 2003. Barry and Robin have since gone their separate ways, professionally, for the most part. Robin's recorded a couple of solo albums, and Barry collaborated with Barbra Streisand for the 25th anniversary/followup to Guilty in 2005. I know they've appeared together for a couple of concerts here and there, but I don't think they've done any recording. Dunno if they've done any writing/producing together for other artists. The Bee Gees basically died with Maurice. If he were still alive and well today, I have no doubt they would still be active as a band.

But I'm veering off the subject. Eddie and Alex would do well to follow the Gibbs' example, as would Journey, Foreigner, Chicago, etc. Not that they'd listen to the fans, but whatever.

I believe that Barry and Robin Gibb are set to resume recording/touring as The Bee Gees from what I read a while back.

Yeah, I've heard the rumor that Eddie wanted to fire Mike in 1981 too. However, I've heard that the source of this rumor was David Lee Roth. I think Dave would do just about anything to be able to stay in Van Halen.

In the mid-90's Eddie said that he would refuse to ever do an "oldies tour". He said that there was no point in touring if there was no new music to tour behind. However, the last two VH tours have been oldies tours. Its a shame that this once great man has become such a joke.

Eddie said in 1996 that doing a tour to support a greatest hits album "would be ripping off our fans." Yet, he did just that in 2004 and released no album whatsoever (not even a hits album) when they reconvened with Roth in 2007.
