Ted Baxter was arguably the best role of Ted Knight's career and certainly the one he is most remembered for. I can't see Ted Knight walking away from that. So I'm guessing this was a negotiating ploy on his part.

That's what I think too, but other people I have asked said he was unhappy on the set.
