Sad Phil Collins Quitting Music Due to Failing Health

His back hurts from a dislocated vertebra. He's lost some of his hearing. Nerve damage makes it hard for him to hold his drumsticks.

The decades of rock and roll have taken their toll on Phil Collins – both from the wear-and-tear on his body and the pain from the constant barbs from critics.

After seven Grammys, 13 hit singles and an Oscar for a song from Disney's Tarzan, he's decided to call it quits from the music industry.

"I don't really belong to that world and I don't think anyone's going to miss me," Collins, 60, tells FHM, according to Time magazine. I'm much happier just to write myself out of the script entirely."

Collins, who lives in Switzerland, adds: "I'm sorry that it was all so successful. I honestly didn't mean it to happen like that. It's hardly surprising that people grew to hate me."

Mr. Phil Collins...

I still like you and your music. 40 years is a good run for a drummer. You did great drumming during Genesis Peter Gabriel Years, and you HAD a lot of guts taking over Peter Gabriel's singing...though it was difficult to do so, you pulled-off singing songs such as "Knife", "Musical Box", and "Supper's Ready"...then once Genesis became mainstream...you made a lot of success with Genesis as well as your solo career. I've liked the pop and prog Genesis (not many do....) "Abacab", "Invisible Touch", and "Follow You, Follow Me" are great songs. And songs such as "In the Air Tonight", "Sussudio", and "Something Happened on the way to Heaven" are great solo songs. And not only you were a drummer...you were a singer, pianist, and songwriter, that's one hell of a resume. Maybe you can go back into acting or something like "Britain's Got Talent", I wish I can send this to Phil Collins himself...he'd probably shed a tear or two if he saw this post.

I wasn't aware that he was "hated." Well, I'm sure plenty of people hate his music, but I highly doubt all of his fans who helped him sell out arenas for years have abandoned him. Anyway, I hope he is able to get well.

I like Phil but I've been sick of "In the Air Tonight" for several years now. One of the so-called classic rock stations I like to gripe about seems to think it's the only solo song he ever recorded.

I'm sorry to hear the bad news. I also agree with Charles about "In the Air Tonight" - while a good song, it is TOTALLY overplayed. Give me something like "Don't Lose My Number" any day.

That or "I Wish it Would Rain Down" which is my favorite solo hit by Phil.

Sad

How very sad. So in honor of such a great performer, here is a most appropriate song-and so underrated. I've been looking for a copy of this song for years...

Sorry I couldn't figure out how to post the actual video like the post above.

I like a good deal of Phil's solo material, but like more of his Genesis songs ("Follow You, Follow Me", "In Too Deep", "Tonight Tonight Tonight", "That's All", "Misunderstanding", "No Reply at All", and my personal favorite, "Abacab"). Of course, your mileage may vary!!

Sad to hear Phil's failing health will prevent him from touring or making music in the future. Everyone has their critics, but so much of Phil's music (as a solo artist and with Genesis) has brought great happiness to people around the world over the years. If you can put a smile on a person's face through your work, that's a powerful, wonderful thing, especially during these trying times. Whenever I hear "Sussudio" or "Billy, Don't You Lose My Number" on the radio in my car or when I'm shopping at the grocery store, it makes me smile and do a little dance... to heck with what other people think! So, thanks for the happy memories, Phil, and good luck to you!

Movie

"Take a Look at Me Now" (from the movie "Against All Odds") and "You'll Be in
My Heart" (from Disney's "Tarzan") were two of his great songs from motion
pictures.

Well...here's three songs that Phil Collins sang when Genesis was in the Prog Years....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JaYY9ORnR4E(This song is what gave Phil Collins the drumming position in Genesis)!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpBvETuav3U

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=slLtKktbxTw(This song features the ending of "Musical Box".)

Cool

Here's a 1986 clip of the now-defunct NBC soap opera Another World, featuring Ellen Wheeler and Tom Eplin. "Don't Lose My Number" is played in the background, and fits perfectly in the scene (starting around the 2:30 mark). (Sorry, I forget how to imbed these...)

I think that Phil is in a bad place mentally right now. In a recent interview he said that if it weren't for his sons that he would have ended his life.
