Ryan Lambie The already busy Tim Burton is apparently developing an adaptation of The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, with Josh Brolin set to star… Published on Mar 2, 2011 Erstwhile genius Tim Burton has no shortage of projects in the pipeline, with his name attached to the strange board game adaptation, Monsterpocalypse, a Hollywood treatment of horror/history mash-up Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (on which he'll act as producer), a big screen version of macabre 60s soap Dark Shadows, as well as the in-production full-length updating of his classic short, Frankenweenie. As if all those features weren't enough to keep him busy, he's now said to be teaming up with actor Josh Brolin to bring a new adaptation of The Hunchback Of Notre Dame to the screen. It's hard to imagine the picturesque Brolin dragging his knuckles across the floor as Quasimodo, but after his less than glamorous turn in True Grit, who knows? (The image shown in the top right is from You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger, due out in March in the UK. We thought Mr Brolin's hair looked quite Quasimoto in that.) Where Burton will fit the Hunchback project into his busy schedule isn't yet clear, nor has he committed to direct. He's currently slated to produce, though Slashfilm report that he may make a more firm commitment if the script proves to be up to scratch. For us, Burton's at his best when he's tackling more off-the-wall, personal projects. His bigger budget, more bombastic pictures such as Sweeney Todd and Alice In Wonderland may have brought home cash and awards in abundance, but he's yet to better films like The Nightmare Before Christmas (appreciating he didn't direct that one) or Ed Wood. We're hoping that Frankenweenie, due out next year, will prove to be a return to form, and that The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, if he does decide to direct it, will be made in the spirit of his earlier work, rather than his later output. I thought Burton was also going to remake The Addams Family.

Why can't Burton do something new and original, instead of yet another remake?
He did a movie called Big Fish, which was based on a novel and was a fine, quirky film. It was his only non-remake of the past decade. |

He's making a stop-motion animated 3D film based off of the original comics, so it's more like another adaptation rather than a remake. |
