New Zealand Bans Weird Baby Names
Joins Handful Of Other Countries Banning Unusual Monikers

Posted: Friday, July 22, 2011
Updated: 9:15 am CDT July 22, 2011

New Zealand has joined a handful of other countries in banning baby names that are strange or unusual, Australia's Herald Sun reported. The move follows similar rules in Sweden, where Superman, Metallica and Elvis, and the name Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116, pronounced Albin, are not allowed; and the Dominican Republic, where gender-non-specific names such as Qeurida Pina (Dear Pineapple) and Tonton Ruiz (Dummy Ruiz) were banned. The list of weird names for kids banned by New Zealand’s names registrar has grown to include Lucifer, Duke, Messiah and 89. Also not approved: Bishop, Baron, General, Judge, King, Knight and Mr. Those names were all said to be too similar to titles. The agency has refused to allow names involving asterisks, commas, periods and other punctuation marks, as well as the letters C, D, I and T as first names, the Herald Sun reported.

I can't imagine trying to remember how to spell that name. It's weird and the teasing a child would get from having that name would be awful.

Interesting...But I bet the kids will be happy about this when they are old enough to go to school!

What difference does a name make ?
They keep track of us with a number anyway.

I'm a fan of people giving their children traditional names that reflect their cultural heritage... I like incentives like this - http://www.croatiantimes.com/index.php?id=2639 ... The article about New Zealand has some "banned" names that are pretty normal to me, so I don't support governments banning names...

I agree, how does an unusual name affect their life? They need to mind their own business in my opinion. It's good to see that America is not the only place getting stupider, and stupider. lol

A couple new baby names that probably would be banned there.

Maple Sylvie Bateman [Jason Bateman's new baby] http://thecelebritycafe.com/feature/...ain-02-16-2012

Blue Ivy Carter [Beyonce's baby]

They'd probably ban my nieces name too, Cyndel. She's named after a character from the Ewoks movie. I'm just glad nobody calls her Cyndelrella. lol

Whats wrong with the name Elvis? Jeez these governments need to worry about more important stuff other than baby names.

they shouldn't ban the names - but if the child can't spell, write and pronounce their own name by age 4, then they should be denied all government benefits like school, medical, etc.

I don't feel any country has the Right to control what people name their offsprings....BUT I believe the parents NEED good sense in choosing their children's names as these kids are saddled for life with the parents' choice...
