Wasn't the one that died in 1979 a stand-in or something like that? I thought I read somewhere that the original Mr. Ed's real name was Bamboo Harvester and that he had died several years before the one in 1979.

There were two different horses. One was named Bamboo Harvester and he played Mister Ed in the series. The other horse posed for many of the studio publicity photos. There is some disagreement as to whether the horse that died in 1979 was Bamboo Harvester or his photo double. Most sources give Bamboo Harvesters date of death as either 1968, 1973, or 1974. So the horse that died in 1979 was probably the photo double.

how many of you remember that episode of "SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE" where they reported his death on "WEEKEND UPDATE" then Bill Murrey did an interview with Mr. Eds "widow".

I remember reading that Alan Young claims Ed died due to a mistake of some sort, in other word's the horse's life was cut short. He also mentioned that peanut butter was not used to make his mouth move -- apparently Alan made that up himself as a false explanation...!

yea, they'd roll up a stocking and place between his upper teeth and gums. While the horse wwould be trying to dislodge it, his mouth would move and it looked like he was talking.
And no, it wasn't painful.

my Mr Ed book says one way was Ed was trained to move his lips when the trainer rubbed/scratched one of his hoof(s)
