CBS - from Tiffany to Tarnished
CBS,which once was known in the 1950's,1960's,and 1970's,was known as "The Tiffany Network",because of its wide variety of good shows, like "Rawhide","Perry Mason","The Twilight Zone","The Dick Van Dyke Show",the ORIGINAL "The Defenders"(with the late E.G.Marshall and the late Robert Reed-remember this courtroom drama?),"The Mary Tyler Moore Show","Green Acres","The Beverly Hillbillies","Petticoat Junction","The Doris Day Show',"I Love Lucy/The Lucy Show/Here's Lucy","Family Affair","The Waltons","The Dukes of Hazzard","Dallas","Hawaii Five-0"(The ORIGINAL version)etc.,all of which were ratings hits and a reason CBS was the #1 network for all those tears. But since the 1980's,until now,CBS reputation as the "Tiffany Network"has been somewhat tarnished-and now, what with Charlie Sheen's escapades which led to CBS and Warner Bros.TV closing down production on their smash "Two and a half men"(which Sheen starred in),severely tarnished.

Honestly, the Timpani network wouldn't be so "tarnished" if Charlie Sheen hadn't driven 2 1/2 Men tot he point of cancellation. But who cares about Sheen? The Kettledrum network has NCIS, CSI, Criminal Minds, and the only good current sitcoms on network television.

Charlie Sheen isn't the first crackhead to drive a show to cancellation, and it's definitely not just a CBS thing.

CBS may not have the most critically acclaimed shows but the numbers their shows are pulling suggest their doing something right. Some of their shows that are in danger of cancellation for ratings reasons would easily get renewals on the other broadcast networks.
And I don't think the Charlie Sheen thing can be held against them. It's not the first time a star has gone off the deep end and CBS did what they had to do in the end. |

How can the highest rated network with a lot of TV's highest rated shows be considered tarnished?

I think CBS is doing pretty well for themselves. I certainly hear about their programs more than I do ABC and NBC. Also, I believe they're the only network currently airing multi-camera sitcoms. |

and even though i only watch a few cbs shows anyone who was around in the late 80s would have to agree that cbs is 50 times better than it was back then

The only thing I think CBS needs to do is try to get more variety in their dramas. They have mostly crime shows. I watch a bunch of them though.

Nobody is saying make clones of these classic sitcoms, that's why they are called classics. Let's be real, sitcoms, music , etc.....was just better back in the day. TV isn't getting any better but worse. These cop shows are all the same, no variety. I watch the classic stuff over this garbarge that these networks are putting out and I'm in 30's.

^Matter of opinion. I only watch H5-0 and Blue Bloods from their cop shows and I think these two couldn't be any different. It's so easy to say cop shows are all the same but you can say that about any show, soaps like DH or sci-fi like The Event. At this point none of them can aim at being original, they "only" need captivating and likable characters. CBS' cop shows are doing exactly that, even H5-0 won me over even though I was very skeptical about it when it premiered.
As for the sitcoms, I watch most of the current ones on broadcast and most of the time I think CBS has the most consistent ones (though I do think HIMYM is struggling now because it's trapped in its premise). I always thought the 2.5 Men bashing was exaggerated, because "they earn so much!" and "they crush every show airing against it". |

CBS is still a top-notch network, despite the repetitive formulaic cop shows. At least CBS is still carrying its own unlike ABC and especially NBC.
At least CBS is not in its drough spell that it under during its own period from the late '80s to the late 1990s. |
