At the opposite extreme are the Panthers, who are drawing a slightly smaller average local rating than last weekend’s infomercial hawking an ice-crushing blender.
Apparently, more viewers prefer to watch ice being crushed than the Panthers being crushed on ice. A half-dozen items that caught our eye in our recent check on viewership trends (thanks to Sports Business Journal for some of the NBA and NHL numbers): Read more: http://www.miamiherald.com/2011/02/2...#ixzz1F1tXGqTq

Soccer I could understand, but at least hockey is a bit more interesting. At least to me.

I think the NHL should move several "sun belt" teams to other cities. These would include the likes of Florida, Tampa Bay, Atlanta, and Phoenix.

I still wish a Cleveland Team would be in the NHL.
It's a smaller market than Baseball and Football so this may help Cleveland more than Miami. But don't call them the Cleveland Barons, that name should be retired, maybe keep the name The Monsters (of the AHL), call them The Cleveland Monsters. And there can be a great Ohio Rivalry between the Blue Jackets and the Monsters.... |

What would be more interesting is a comparison between all the cities that have both NHL and NBA cities and not just one city.
I'm not surprised Florida doesn't do well hockeywise, however quite a handful of markets that have both NHL and NBA do quite well hockeywise. Speaking of the NBA, whatever happened to Shawn Kemp? Was it 7 women and 6 children or vice versa? |

Toronto New York Boston Philadelphia Washington Atlanta Miami Detroit Chicago Minneapolis/St. Paul Dallas Denver Phoenix Los Angles These cities have BOTH a basketball and a hockey franchise, but I think the cities where hockey gets the attention is Boston, New York, Toronto, Philadelphia, Detroit, Chicago, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Denver, and Los Angles. I still think cities such as Kansas City, Cleveland, Winnipeg, Quebec City, Regina (Saskatchewan), Las Vegas, and Seattle would be better markets for Hockey.... |

I forgot about Travis Henry, however the NYJ player this is the first I'm reading about this.
Shawn Kemp stands out only because he is the first I heard about and I remember it being a big story. Now this type of stuff, unfortunately sounds more common. |

Mr. Clevleland (am having trouble with editing)
Seattle is the biggest mystery why they are never even mentioned for an NHL team. That one I can't figure out. The first 4 cities you mentioned did have NHL teams. Washington may be an up and coming market. For the longest time, they weren't one of the better NHL markets but since they have one of the best players, it is becoming a better market. |
