I just stumbled upon this a few days ago. I didn't even know they knew each other, much less sang with each other!

It was part of a Diana Ross TV special. I don't know if they actually knew each other off-screen, but it was likely that Hagman was on the special because he was one of the most popular stars of that time.
You have to love the hackneyed dialogue between them. These type of celebrity comedy/variety specials are part of a bygone era. |

...a CBS variety special, "Diana" (February 2, 1981), which also featured Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones as guest stars. Because Larry was "red hot" on the network's #1 drama/'telenovela', "DALLAS", he was included as a guest as well {back then, it was the custom for the network's most popular stars to appear in their variety [or other kind of] specials}. His singing ability dates from a 1950 Columbia record duet he did with his mother Mary Martin, "Get Out Those Old Records".

Was she still at Motown then or was she already at RCA?

I think this was right about the time she split Motown for RCA. |

..."telenovela" has been used to describe Latin-American (or "Spanish-American") serialized dramas that appear five nights {or days} a week ["UGLY BETTY" originated as a Colombian 'telenovela', "YO SOY BETTY, LA FEA"] ; it's used more often these days.
And yes, Diana was in negotiations to move from Motown to RCA records in early 1981, at the time her special was produced.
