Confused This Couldn't Have Been True About 'Gilligan's Island'...Could It???

As the show progressed, producers planned to introduce a new character - a pet dinosaur - but decided against it because of the cost of special effects. The character, however, was incorporated into the animated "Gilligan's Planet" (1982).

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057751/trivia

Was this true? or was this made up???

In "Surviving Gilligan's Island" (the TV movie/retrospective that was narrated by Bob Denver, Dawn Wells, and Russell Johnson) there is a scene where Sherwood Schwartz tells Bob Denver that the network has come up with the idea for Gilligan to have a pet dinosaur. Bob expresses his view that this is a crazy, stupid idea----and Sherwood says, "Don't worry, when they see these cost projections, they'll talk themselves out of it."

And that's exactly what happened, thank God!

Well I knew it couldn't have been Sherwood's idea! Although I would have loved to see him use this idea in a Brady Bunch script just to see how Robert Reed would react!!

Bumper, the little alien dinosaur, is certainly a character in Gilligan's Planet. He's delightful.

The bigwigs told Sherwood that the dinosaur was going to be their answer to Mr. Ed.

Why would a show that aired on the same network as GI (if in fact it was even on the air anymore at the time the dinosaur idea was pitched) need 'answering'?
