DETROIT, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- Proponents of putting a RoboCop statue in Detroit say they have hit their $50,000 fundraising goal, bringing the idea closer to reality.
The group behind www.detroitneedsrobocop.com, which was formed after Mayor Dave Bing rejected a joking suggestion for a statue honoring the cyborg protagonist of the 1987 science-fiction action film on his Twitter account, said they reached their goal with 1,500 donations and they will continue to raise money until the March 29 deadline, the Detroit Free Press reported Wednesday. Jerry Paffendorf, a Detroit artist helping to raise cash for the project, said organizers hope to raise more money to make the statue "as big and good as possible." "This could be a multi-hundred-thousand-dollar kick starter," he said. "It's remarkable." Organizers said the plan is for a group of artists, including Matthew Barney, husband of pop star Bjork, to create the statue at the outdoor art project Imagination Station near the abandoned Michigan Central Station. Paffendorf said the RoboCop statue could kick off a series of public art installations in the city. "With all of this publicity, we have a big opportunity to extend this to other projects in Detroit," Paffendorf said. Read more: http://www.upi.com/Odd_News/2011/02/...#ixzz1EB6mEIQJ
