Question Could Freddie Prinze Jr. Remake 'Chico & The Man?'

On the heels of Jason Ritter saying he would love to play his late father John Ritter's most famous role (Jack Tripper from Three's Company) in a remake, it made me wonder, could Freddie Jr. pull off the same thing?

It would be interesting to imagine, but Freddie Jr has all ready said that he's not funny the way his father was. He listens to his stand up act and he doesn't see himself doing it like his father did. 'Chico' really should get another go round though. It would nice to see either a show or maybe---if I can be so bold----a movie? It would be VERY hard to find someone to fill the role though!

I wouldn't want them to re-do it. It jsut would be the same without Freddie. Now if it was a different show with a similar storyline then, yeah go for it...

I am not sure the show's premise would play to modern audiences, if what passes for entertainment today is any indication. The seventies were such a different time. Even though the show had an edge to it back in the day, I am not sure the issues are as relevant. Sorry, I have just gotten very cynical about the state of entertainment today. Old age, I guess.

I completely agree with your cynicism! I just posted last night to another forum that shows these days are mainly calculated to be "hip"--usually to the point of being offensive! There wasn't much that could have offended anyone in CATM, apart maybe from the early objections of some Latinos that Freddie wasn't "Chicano" enough by virtue of being half-Hungarian.

I do think the premise might fly in these times of people not being able to retire due to finances (that was not explicitly stated about Ed, but it could be written that way now), and being recently returned veterans looking for work (Chico). The individual episodes might have to address different issues, but perhaps it could work. I don't think Freddie Jr. would be right for it, though.

I wrote a "treatment" ages ago for a "movie" based on the series--assuming the premise that Chico had not really died and came back to claim Ed's daughter, but found her married to someone else. But as I said elsewhere this morning on the CATM board, no more creative juices here....

Hi Ms Lori and Ms Marie!
You girls have been gone WAAAAAYYYYY TOOOOO LOOONNNNNNGGGGGG!
While I agree with you about the "state of entertainment" nowadays, (a lot of it is just gross) I have to say that I think Chico could work on a nostalgia point. A lot of people are tired of the gross jokes, offensive comments and just plain groan moments. Chico could have a few too, but they were still usually funnier than now. It might show the people doing these shows now what they are doing wrong. (Hey, a girl can dream right?! LOL)

Exactly right. The premise is dated (though relevant in the 1970s), and Freddie Jr. just doesn't have the comedic chops to pull it off. Besides, Chico's brand of humor was not exactly PC - and in today's society you wouldn't get away with those types of jokes.

I don't think he could do it because, it seemed to be part of his Dad's personality in the character anything else would be a poor imitation.

Not to mention, I can't even think of a young Hispanic actor and an elderly actor around today who would fit the characters....

Bad idea for Ritter and Prinze. And Prinze Jr. is not a very good actor, so all it would do is show how much funnier his father was.

These guys should be seeking out original roles and looking to establish themselves on their own.

Welcome back folks! I have story ideas but the problem is it would be too hard for me to write them down as all that typing would tire me out. I know Mike has met Freddie by now and told him all about us all...

I would like to think that Freddie is irreplaceable in that role. I could never think of anyone playing Chico but Freddie. It was part of his delivery and personality that made the show..that and the chemistry between Freddie and Jack.
