Why the heck did Katie get a spanking? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I watched the episode "Don't Quote Me" and really can't figure out why Katie got a spanking. I know she told some friends at school what her father said about Senator Englehart, and then she covered it up but still. Good grief. Why would she get spanked over that? Did I miss something?

Though it may be hard to understand by today's standards. Katie's father loved her with all his hart and believed the methods of discipline he employed were not only acceptable but would ensure future proper behavior patterns in his daughter.

Gene Gatling wasn't a bad father. His beliefs were the product of his growing up in the 1930's a different time for sure, an age not always understood using modern logic.
