Heart PAIRINGS TO THE MAX...GILLIGAN AND MARYANN

OK--what is the farthest romantically you think Gilligan and Maryann would go??

Come on, where are all the players? I don't want to play alone! Where are Old Grouch and all the others? Come play!

WELL ... according to the TV movie that Sherwood wrote but never sold, they ended up married with kids. (Bob Denver mentions it in his book).

Who can argue with Sherwood Schwartz?

Cool

Of all the potential G.I. pairings this is the one that I find the most realistic. I've always thought these were the two who were most likely to get together after the group was rescued from the island.

Sorry, lm. Gilligan and Mary Ann have just celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary with their six kids, 14 grandkids, and their newborn great grandson.

Gilligan and Mary Ann were destined to be together from the start. As soon as she licked that tree sap in Goodbye Island and told him it was almost as sweet as he was.

Haha, stop it with the tree sap, Teebs! It started way before that - all the way back in episode 3 she was all, "Oh, Ginger, isn't he marvelous?" with that glassy look in her eye. Watch out.

Yes, it did seem that Mary Ann always had a crush on Gilligan. This isn't particularly easy to understand. They seemed to attempt to recognize this in the 25th episode or so, when the Howells tried to get them together. Oddly the attempt (and the episode) seemed to fall apart in the middle. I wonder why that was? Also, Gilligan rarely seemed to show any affection for Mary Ann, which was strange, to say the least...

I've always wondered why she said that.

The Matchmaker was two stories in one that looked like it had been chopped down the middle with a hatchet. One minute Mrs. Howell's matchmaking the youngsters, the next we're treated to that whole French restaurant scene which I start fast-forwarding through as soon as Ginger begins dancing.

Sherwood wanted there to be two couples. Gilligan and Mary Ann, and Ginger and the Professor. It was only the intervention of the censors that stopped him in his tracks.

All Gilligan suffered from was a lack of emotional maturity. It would have come in time. (If I had been on the writing team, that is. ) Meanwhile, Mary Ann was undoubtedly Gilligan's closest friend on the island after the Skipper.

I'd just like to add, there's no such pairing as Mary Ann and the Professor.

She said it because she liked him? He was talking about how he defeated the alleged supply hut robber and she thought he was being heroic. She had it BAD. I mean, he's a cute little guy who is nice and fun to hang around with - I don't see why people are so shocked that she liked him.

Someone brought up a point about Matchmaker the other day that I hadn't considered before. The episode could be looked at as being about Lovey. It's about love and how much she loves love and marriage and all that. She sees the potential in MAG and wants to nurture it, but at the core the episode could technically be about Lovey and her relationship with love and marriage. However, the second half of the episode is super annoying and it is a very abrupt switch in focus. The storyline is the same, but the focus goes from MAG to Lovey/Thurston rather abruptly and doesn't really go back to MAG - and no one brings it up - until the tag scene where they walk by and the Howells look so thrilled that they didn't totally screw it up.

And there was clearly a Girl Gossip scene that we didn't get to see since Ginger knew all about how Lovey was trying to make everything all romantic for MAG - would've loved to see that conversation.

Also, can we point out that THREE PEOPLE tell him that MA has a crush on him in that episode and he doesn't take them seriously until they're at dinner. ("Ginger was ... the guys were right!" and he's all nervous and excited about it).

Party: I think he showed affection for her in his own awkward way. They were always hanging out together. He got all pouty and jealous when Duke showed up. He let her kiss him on the cheek all the time. There are a bunch of examples, mostly in the first season, but they're sprinkled throughout the later episodes as well.

It totally is.

For anyone interested, this face appears in Gilligan Goes Gung Ho when Gilligan spots Mary Ann rehearsing with the Professor through the window. Someone even commented somewhere that he looks more shocked to see her in the Professor's arms than when Ginger pulls out the gun to 'shoot' him.

Oh, and you put it in a nutshell, right here- "he's a cute little guy who is nice and fun to hang around with - I don't see why people are so shocked that she liked him."

AGREED!

I think the MAP people have been scared off the board! I don't believe in
MAP either but I wonder if any of them are courageous enough to come
back!

Reply to JWood201--I believe that was I who mentioned to you the idea of
Ep.25 being "Lovey's" episode actually. I also agree with you that MAG
does not start with Ep.25.

Reply to Teebs--Yes, I noted in my episode entry on "Gung Ho" how Gilligan
reacts while witnessing the playacting through the window; I talked
about how my son had noted it, in fact.
