It was directed by Ralph Bashki, and it was an animated film from 1981. They used rotoscoping for this film (that is they shot it with actors, and went back and animated it).

Anyway it tells the story of four generations of a family whose life revolves around the beat of popular music, from ragtime to punk rock.

I have it on DVD, I'm a huge Bakshi fan. American Pop is definitely one of my favorites of his.
