Police: Mom Went Tanning, Left Baby In Hot Car
Imene Nouis Cited On Suspicion Of Child Abuse, Police Say
Deb Stanley, 7NEWS Producer

Posted: 10:30 am MDT September 2, 2011 Updated: 4:22 pm MDT September 2, 2011

Parker, Colo. -- Police officers cited a mother on suspicion of child abuse Thursday after they said they found her 11-month-old baby in a hot car. Police said Imene Nouis left the baby in the car at about 1:15 p.m. while she went into a tanning salon. "She was asleep and I didn't want to wake her," Nouis told 7NEWS. A woman on her way to tan notified workers at the salon of the child left in the car. "I immediately called the police and then we shut the bed off," said Daniel Rohn, of At The Beach.

When officers got the baby out of the car, the temperature inside was 138 degrees. "She was stunned," said Rohn. "She didn’t quite understand what was going on and didn't think she had done anything wrong." Police said the baby appeared to be fine. Rohn said the girl was sweating and very thirsty. Rohn said the mother planned on tanning for 12 minutes, then spray tanning, which would have lasted a total of about 30 minutes.

The mother was cited, but not arrested, police said. "The Parker Police Department takes this very seriously," said Sherry Corcoran, of the Parker Police Department. "It was a misjudgment," Nouis said. "I love my daughter." 7NEWS found Nouis has a profile on a babysitting website that says she is looking for work as a babysitter. The high temperature on Thursday was 96 degrees -- near the record high of 97 degrees.

She's lucky that the baby was ok. It's pretty lame that she left her baby in the car because she "didn't want to wake her up." I doubt anyone will hire her as a babysitter.

I'd like to knock her teeth right out of her head. That poor baby. It will be a miracle if she lives to see 10.

The child should be taken away, that's willful neglect of a child, and possibly abandonment.

I love how everyone diminishes bad behavior these days. It's all "a bad choice" or "a misjudgement". What PC nonsense. If you have a brain in your skull you don't leave a child in a steaming hot car alone for an hour.

They should have put a padlock on her tanning bed and turned it up, full blast. Show her what hot feels like. Sorry, this story has me nuts. I keep thinking of that poor little baby in distress.

The DHS should get that baby and do more than just cite the mom!

^ I know what you mean, when we were kids we'd stay out in the car & listen to the radio while our mom got groceries. We were old enough to roll the windows down & if we got too hot we'd take the keys & go in the store. But that was a different era. I wouldn't leave any child alone in the car now-a-days and especially not an infant, it's just too dangerous.

Not to mention all the stories everyone has heard about the other baby deaths that resulted in being left unattended in the car, it should be common knowledge.
