The Office star Ed Helms has revealed that the show will not immediately replace the departing Steve Carell.

The actor, who plays Andy Bernard on the NBC sitcom, told Collider that viewers will see "a lot of experimentation over many, many episodes".

"Steve's leaving and out of that will come... one of the craziest storylines in the history of Dunder Mifflin," he claimed. "Who's gonna replace Michael Scott? Will it be a person [or] will the position change? It might be a while before Dunder Mifflin finds a kind of equilibrium. But it'll be fun to watch!"

Helms also described Carell's exit from the show as "the greatest opportunity ever".

"Why would we just stick someone in [as a replacement] and keep going like we've been going?" he asked. "We have this amazing deep bench of incredible cast [members] who all love the show and love being a part of it. The producers know and understand that and I think they want to celebrate everybody and get everyone in there."

He added that several characters will be "jockeying" for the role of office boss in future episodes.

"You'll probably see some surprises," he suggested. "I actually don't know what is going to happen but I'm kind of excited to play it out."
