When You Include DVR Info, Conan Is King Of Late Night

Times have changed, and cable no longer plays automatic second trombone to network TV. ESPN hosts Monday Night Football and the BCS championship game, the NBA playoffs are on TNT and the new king of late night is on TBS.

Deadline relays TBS's assertion that Conan O'Brien's late-night talker on TNT topped the ratings in the 18-34 and 18-49 demographics when DVR viewings are taken into account.

Conan edged show-swiper Jay Leno in the 18-49 demo from Nov. 8 until the end of December, garnering 1.44 million nightly viewers to Leno's 1.35 million. Coco was even more dominant with viewers aged 18-34, 930,000 viewers to The Daily Show's 574,000.

Haven't missed an episode yet, but at the same time, I can't help but notice that some spark in his comedy died when he left NYC. I wish he was doing the show back here...

Letterman is good, but Fallon, in my opinion, is really making Late Night his own. Have gone to his show about 7 times this past year!

It's commonly accepted that when Conan moved to Los Angeles to do The Tonight Show, he "cleaned up" his comedy quite a bit to try and lure in Joe Sixpack, who'd been watching Leno for seventeen years. In doing that, though, he alienated a lot of longtime fans.

However, I think that since it came back from Christmas break, Conan is starting to feel a lot more like Late Night With Conan O'Brien in its "glory days." He seems to be getting a lot more comfortable with his new surroundings and with the new freedoms that owning his show (and being on basic cable) gives him.

I agree, somewhat... last night's video clip featuring Conan visiting his own wax-sculpture at the museum was very "Late Night" Conan, and the new "Video Blog" sketch they do truly cracks me up. I understand why he isn't using old sketches, but a big part of the show that I miss is him using La Bamba and the rest of the band in more sketches...

I also miss the old sketches. He hinted on Larry King last month that despite the whole "intellectual property of NBC" garbage, they'll be back later.

They weren't the most popular or well-known Late Night bits, but he did use Raisin and Mike Merrit's Inner Thoughts last week -- in the same episode.
