MLK Snow Make-Up Day Angers Civil Rights Groups - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

ATLANTA -- The decision by two Georgia counties to use the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday to make up a snow day holiday has infuriated civil rights leaders.

Fannin and Gilmer counties in northern Georgia are calling students to class on the federal holiday after school was canceled for the week due to the winter storm that struck Georgia.

The superintendents said they had little choice but to hold classes on Monday to make up for nine snow days they've missed this school year.

Georgia State NAACP Chapter President Edward DuBose said it's "humiliating to hear that school districts want to take a snow day rather than to honor Dr. King's legacy."

Nine snow days in Georgia... Love it. At this point, when you've had to cancel school that many times, you're better off just holding school on Saturdays until you've gotten all caught up.

That's what we had to do when I was in sixth grade the 1996-1997 school year when we were getting hit with blizzard after blizzard after blizzard (seriously, we got 10+ blizzards that winter!), and it dumped about 9 feet of snow all together across the state.

We had snow days this past week too, but we are still off on Monday.

In my district if we need to make up a lot of days, we add 30 minutes to the beginning of the school day and 30 minutes to the end until the days are made up. I like that much better than coming in on holidays, weekends, or in the summer to make up for snow days. Luckily we do not have to make any up yet!

This is stupid at both ends! The school SHOULD be closed on MLK Day and just add two more weeks during June, but the Activists should lay low...I'm surprised that Jackson or Sharpton didn't open their mouths yet....

Any excuse to play the race card, ugh.

I have nothing against the holiday itself. I just think that sometimes people look for reasons to gripe when it comes to certain things. I bet these same people wouldn't have a problem if it was any other holiday. I bet it won't be long before Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson start screaming racism. *shakes head* Btw, most work places don't give employees MLK day off so how is that any different?

When I was in school we never had that day as a holiday. It's been nearly 13 years since I graduated (May 1998). I think they only made MLK an offical day off of school within the last decade or so.

Back in September of 2008 Hurricane Ike hit here. My sister's school district was out for two weeks, but the district decided not to make the students make it up. That, imo, seems like a lot of time to miss.
