what do you think the outside looks like?

they never showed the outside, did they? The show was filmed at Desilu studios where Andy griffith was also filmed and they showed the outside of Andy's house.

Well we know the Petrie's house was a one-story. set in New York so either wood siding or brick.

The home also had a basement which had a totally different layout between two visits in Season 2 ep "Hustling the Hustler" (Stairs lead down alongside wall to billiard room.) and Season 4 ep "Your Home Sweet Home Is My Home Sweet Home" (Stairs come down in middle of wall to room with giant rock on side.).

and in "HUSTLING THE HUSTLER" that rock was never even mentined.
