Was Vera Close to Getting A Spinoff From 'Alice?' Either Way, She Would've Said No!
http://news.google.com/newspapers?id...+howland&hl=en
![]() In The article above, the actress who played Vera, Beth Howland, wanted nothing to do with her own series. She didn't wanted to be tied down with work because she wanted to do plenty of theater. |

Good for her!! Vera was WAY too weak a character to carry her own show, anyway.

I think that Vera did develop as time went on. When I saw her on the first episode, it almost seemed like she a little slow and mousy. She was still naive later but stood up for herself more and her intelligence became more known. I used to love when she would say to Mel "In a rat's hat, Dumbo!" LOL.

Vera certainly did show a lot of growth over the course of the series but she was still best as a supporting character.

I don't like how Beth didn't get much attention in the first season or so. (well, Vera, I mean) Her character didn't do so much. But then it seems like they did grow with her, thank goodness. She's one of my favorite characters.
![]() LOL, I love how in "Mel's Cup", Mel goes, "Banana, is that you?"

There was that episode in the final season that focused mainly on Vera and Elliot and the house they bought.

Not everyone is suited to a spinoff. Howland was wise not to attempt her own show. Even Flo, an admittedly stronger character, couldn't carry her own show.
