'Mary Tyler Moore Show' Reunion Chosen As One Of The Top 5 Moments Of Oprah...Agree?
"The Cast of Mary Tyler Moore Reunites," Season 23, May 2008:
Leave it to Oprah to not only pay tribute to her television idol, Mary Tyler Moore, but to literally bring the "Mary Tyler Moore Show" back to life with a full cast reunion and a detailed replica of the MTM set. Mary Tyler Moore's show ran for seven successful seasons from 1970 to 1977 and followed the exploits of fictional news producer, Mary Richards, and her quirky television staff. The show is credited as culturally path-breaking in its depiction of a young, smart, modern career woman. Oprah cited Moore and the show as significant influences in her own desire to pursue a career in television journalism. In addition to historically reuniting the entire Mary Tyler Moore cast, Oprah's producers and set designers meticulously recreated the key set pieces from the show: the news studio anchor desk area, the general news room, and Mary's apartment. Bearing both the charge of authenticity and the pressure of Oprah's high standards, the crew went as far as to collect historically accurate pieces such as antique stove from the Southwestern University of Michigan Museum and a coffee pot that came from the grandmother of one of the designers. http://www.associatedcontent.com/art...g2.html?cat=39

Can't respond totally in context, since I don't regularly watch Oprah, so I don't know how the MTM reunion show stacks up against any other shows that were aired.
However, that one WAS a thrill for MTM fans, and I've gotta be honest, the recreation of the sets was fantastic! It was stunning how realistic they seemed. (Realistic being a relative term, in that in one way, the original set wasn't even "real" itself...but I digress.) It seemed the sets served to make the actors and actresses feel comfortable and they related some great anecdotes and stories. It was great to see them all again! And I'll always be indebted to Oprah in that I think she really did play a role in getting the final seasons of TMTMS out on DVD. And it also speaks well of O that she recognized the high quality of TMTMS! So, sure, I'd put it right up there. Personally, I'd make it No. 1! |

I rarely ever watch Oprah but I did watch this episode. And it was excellent. The recreations of the original sets were amazing. And having so many original cast members assembled in one place at the same time was awesome!

I am not an Oprah fan at all, but I made a point to watch the TMTMS reunion on her show and it was great. I love how the set designers make the stage look like both the WJM newsroom and Mary's apartment.
